First panning shots

Hello,

Decided to shoot my cousin and his ride after the Thanksgiving dinner. First time ever trying panning I think it came out OK. It was pretty fun.
The light was still pretty harsh (early afternoon) and to be able to shoot longer bursts I switched to JPEG.
Both shot with 85mm 1.8.

Please let me know what you think. What needs to improve?

looks pretty good on the photogrpahy side.

There are two different reds on the car though.

I saw that too, sigma, but chucked it up to the way the light was reflecting of the paint.
I know the car is one color, crazy red.

Good job on the panning none the less.

After the first few passes we realized that we could get better stuff on the other side so the car wouldn't be so blown out.

Question: why is the back of the car out of focus in #2? I expected f/8 to be sufficient at that distance.

Moving object with a moving focal-plane shutter. Somewhere there's a thread that explains the effect in detail.

The faster your shutter speed, the less of it you will see, but you tend to lose background & wheel blur.
I like the effect & tend to push it to the extremes where only a small part of the car is sharp. It's not for everyone!

Side shot most of the car will be in focus

coming or going, either the rear or front will be blurry.

Boy you guys sure have that Thanksgiving dinner pretty early! LOL

we did however come back for seconds after that "shoot".

Looks good for first attempts. To help with the softness shoot a bit wider and crop in. Also the car needs room to move, give it a lot more space in the front for the car "to drive in". Also the second one is rather backlit, try to get the sun on the subject a bit more.

Panning is a skill/art practice, practice, practice.

Yes, I actually didnt have any hopes for walking away with anything good from the first time but its a start.
I was shooting with 85 1.8 to make sure I could get it to focus fast enough so it was a bit tight.

Next time will be better. LOL
