So my amazingly limited photography knowledge has just gotten me deputized to help find a photographer for my sisters wedding. I have looked through a few threads here and wasn't sure if I should put this in the Services Wanted section because I really don't want people pitching themselves to me at this point but am more looking for some third party opinions.

She is getting married in North/Central NJ next December. I have already told her that beyond the initial is this person a real professional person with a business, etc - that it really comes down to her liking the persons style. There are some great threads here about what to ask regarding packages, prints, high res, type of coverage etc.

I plan on asking my friends who have already gotten married about their experiences but is there anyone who is a member here and a photographer themselves that can either recommend someone or tell me some of the things they checked, asked or did when choosing someone for their own wedding?

Thanks

One step ahead of you - there were some good suggestions there. Just wondering if there are any people here that do other type of photography that had to hire someone for their wedding - what their concerns were, etc.

Yeah, it's a totally different perspective isn't it?

I already spoke to this in the other thread, but as a photographer myself, my chief concerns aside from the more general ones like legitimacy/reliability/financials would probably revolve more around style preference, body of work, consistency, gear, etc. I'd definitely want to see lots of sample images and not just in a showcase gallery. I would like to be able to check out a blog which makes it easier to see what a typical wedding looks like from the photographer, etc, etc...

Hey it's got my autograph on it. It might be worth more than what the check was made out for in the not so distant future. Probably not...but you never know.

It would also help to know what her budget/expectations are. That helps steer the conversation too.

Nutshell, she is looking to keep it under $4000 excluding any album, no video, two shooters.

I think that's a very good max budget. She shouldn't have too much trouble finding a solid photographer.
