Dear Board,

I finally got a new used fully operational copy of a Canon F-1.

I bought one when I was a just a kid from my neighbor when he updated to a Canon A-1. I used it my last 2 years of HS, through college, and until I got out of the USAF. In college we had a photo club with a full darkroom. I shot a lot of college basketball and wrestling, and developed and printed my own B&W. I have no idea if any prints or negatives survived though. If they did I can't find them? Once I got out of the USAF I traded it on a Canon A-1 but I never took to that camera. I kind of gave up on photography until my Grandfather passed away and I was given his Nikon FTN kit. I've been back at photography ever since but gravitated to Canon EOS, both film and digital. I am working on assembling a developing kit and will resume doing my own B&W film, which I plan to scan.

It took me a while to find a good F-1, and it took me even longer to find a good motor drive MF, but I have what I need now and the only thing stopping me is me. Oh, and the pictures displayed were shot with an Olympus C-5050. I like to collect and use older gear be it camera gear or fishing gear. Use to destruction is my motto!

Regards,

Tim Murphy

That is awesome. I used a Canon A-1 for a LONG TIME and ran hundreds and hundreds of rolls of film through it, it became an extension of me after a while. With and without motor. I never had an F1, I lusted after one for many years!!!! I still have the A-1 and a lot of the negatives although some have been lost, too many cross country moves over the years!! I still shoot some film but tend towards the EOS film cameras now that work with my existing lenses, and also medium format which I love. I just wish I had more time for film shooting!

Yep...know what that feeling of lust is all about !...... I used to also look at the F1 back in the good ole days when a Pro Photographer was verging on celebrity status hahaha!:) Of course as a young kid back then I could only lust after the camera as the price was well out of my league as it was for most of the market place except for the pro's!. I started on a FTB at school ( showing my age here) and then an AE-1 after leaving school and A1. In the 80's I then migrated to Olympus OM range till digital came around.

Brings back memories. Infact I nearly bought a F1 of Ebay Japan the other day which was in absolute Mint condition...Not a scratch on it. Looked as if it had just came out of the box! IMO Japan is that good for Mint cameras ( In the japanese culture to look after things perfectly) that I regularly put Japan only for advanced searches in Ebay. Way better kept than here in Australia or USA or Europe

The pinnacle for me back then re canon gear would have had to have been the F1 with motor drive. What a beast and it was that beast pro look everyone lusted for hahaha I used to dream of it hanging around me neck I was that infatuated with the camera ...although Nikon had the F series going too that I lusted after however being a Canon shooter I was more fixated on the F1 than anything else.

Below is a pic of a black FTB ( similar to the one I originally had) I bought out of Japan late last year . Cost $100.00AUD (approx 75.00USD) With only 30.00 shipping cost it was a bargain as In Australia a good black FTB in this condition would be $500.00 plus. And even at that price it wouldnt be in as good a condition as the one I ended up sourcing from Japan

I had an Ftb also, and an AE1P also. I still have that one but the Ftb is long gone.

Found dad's box for the Starmatic II. He'd had it is storage for some 18 years and I'd brought it home while downsizing his belongings in '14. This sat in the garage till just the other night when I remembered it was here along with his camera. Dad passed in '15 and this was the camera I recall as a kid that went along on our trips.

It takes good pictures in bright light, but the autofocus is central and cannot be preselected

I made a pin hole camera out of an old shoe box right here in the old U.S. So the answer to does ANYONE in the USA make a camera would be, yes.
