CNN lays off 50 staff members, claiming that pro-sumer technologies and social media have made some editing and photojournalism positions redundant.

I wonder what CNN's liability is when an iReporer (sic) goes off the rails and lies?

I noticed that it took 3 years to study how to make 50 cuts. How many people could they have just cut three years ago to avoid taking three years to make that decision? Inquiring minds want to understand whether or not eliminating the layers of managers which took three years to make one decision could have fully funded all fifty positions for a decade. Or not.

It isn't clear they performed a study on letting go of photogs over the course of three years.
They may have performed a retroactive study going back three years in one day. They may have first been presented the task three years ago of finding ways to improve cost efficiencies. We really don't know.

Even so, do you REALLY think 40 photog jobs would have been saved today had they fired 10 three years ago? No way man. They would have fired 10 three years ago and 40 more 2 years and 6 months ago because they would have seen the effects of free pics much sooner.....These photogs got a three year gift.

Besides, who cares. The good photogs will go make money taking pics of something else, somewhere else. The bad ones will go do something else that hopefully they either like to do or are good at doing.

We might care when the news industry finishes it's spiral down the proverbial toilet bowl.

Actual story, the link to which is in rotation on the main CNN page.

@higgs -- I posted a sarcastic humor attempt which missed the mark, I guess!

Don't worry, they will just ask an iPlumber to come out and snake it for free.

It's hard to judge this cause we have little information to go on, such as did they lay off 50 out of 5,400 total employees? Or did they lay off 25% of their workforce?

But on the surface it does seem like a really dumb move to basically say "well we're laying off professionals, but don't worry - we've got iReporter!"

I'm thinking they'd have been better off with iManage.

Maybe Apple will buy them. Just have iCloud news.

Sadly, alot of them will be forced into being paparrazzi. Like grass widows of the old West being forced into prostitution just to survive.

They are experienced professionals with alot to offer, it's a darn shame this is happening.
