I have been approached by a guy fresh to photography to give him sme lessons and have kind of agreed but am wondering where to start...

I bit of background I live in a country where the English language is a rarity and he is struggling to find anyone who can help hm in a language that he can understand without going on a 350 mile round trip. We met up yesterday and setup up some ideas and thoughts, I have stressed that I am an entusiastic amateur that has an understanding but nothing more and I also have no experience in teaching :o

No money is exchanging hands and we are going to kick off on Monday doing some work indoors going through some basics of camera settings and doing some still life stuff (would love to go outside but it is below freezing all day) and then arrange some trips out to some local sites and see what we cannot do. For me it is a good opportunity to get out and take some pictures with someone and also verbalise my thoughts and practices and maybe learn alittle myself and for him it is an opportunity to spend some time with a photgrapher that has more experience and learn to step out of the green box mode.

I think we have both set out our stalls and know what each of us expect however would love some input as to what sort of things to run through from the community here :)

Thanks in advance

Brian

Teaching is an art in and of itself. I suggest you use a pre-existing on-line instruction set as a "lesson plan" so things don't go too far afield.

Jodie Coston's lesson are quite good: http://www.morguefile.com/docs/Classroom (external link)

I would start by sitting down with him and going through his camera manual. Teach him where all of the buttons are and what they do. Then you can begin the basics of photography and start shooting.
