Sigma lens compatibility issue when new cameras are released

I'm in the market for a 17-50mm, however I've read that since Sigma reverse engineers their lenses, there might be an issue with the compatibility of the lens and new cameras that are released in the future. I have a 60D currently, and will eventually upgrade cameras every few years to whatever the current model is at that time. I am just concerned if I purchase the 17-50 it wont be compatible with the newer models released in the future. Then I would have to go through the trouble of selling a lens that would only work on "older" camera models. Should I just get the Canon 17-55mm so I don't have to worry about this problem? Or is this not really a big deal and is fixable at a reasonable price? Thank you.

Usually if this happens, Sigma will rechip the lens so it will be compatible with newer bodies. This happened one of the older versions of the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 and the 7D where the lens wouldn't AF on the 7D. Sending in to be rechipped by Sigma fixed the problem I believe.

It is really only an issue on older lenses that are out of production. On lenses that are still in production Sigma has been good about re-chipping them like cdo221 says.

Don't worry if you buy a NEW Sigma for your current Canon, but if you are thinking of buying an older, used Sigma which is out of production, the lack of Sigma's continued support for that lens may prevent an update to the chip.

This does raise an uncertainty that, at some time in the future (2020 or ?) when you buy the latest model Canon, you might not be able to use that lens that you bought in 2011 which is out of production in 2020!
