Literally just took my 50L out of the box and shot a half dozen shots. Is this a slow focusing lens? I have a 17-40, 24-70, 70-200 2.8 and 24-105 and they all seems much faster.

Thought I would check here before Googling to see if this seems like it should be.

All things relative. Try out an 85L and the 50L would feel lightning fast. ;)

Hehe soo true

I found the focus speed of the 50 not bad at all. I wouldn't pixel peep too much wide open though

Well, its scary sharp. So much more than my 24-20 both wide open. Nice color as well.

It is 10-15% front focusing it seems, but I would think that a good thing as likely one would focus on eyes and want nose in focus rather than background. Agree? If so, I think I will keep it there rather than dialing in to 50/50.

It is slower. That is normal.

As for front or back focusing, how do you know?

I find it a lot quieter than my 50 1.4 but just a TAD faster. Kinda disappointing but oh well, it wasnt considered a sports lens anyways. I still love it.

Dont expect great results wide open pixel peeping. Although it is one of my favorite lenses and sadly missed

Isn't that a price of paper?

I always wondered if that works. Do you think it does?

Not a piece of paper. Shall we say, a device. And I think it works very well.

Lens is a keeper. Likely took me less time to assess that for this lens than any other I have. Was scared on the slow focus. Have not had a 50 1.4 in a long time, but my perception is that that focused faster. This is for sure my slowest focusing lens. May be a problem if I use it in concert work.

I agree 100%. Compared to the 85 1.2 the 50 is super quick. Its a bit slower than most but still not bad at all.
