Hey everyone I just bought a copy of a 70-200 f/2.8L mk II from B&H and I am very suspicious of it having a back-focus issue.
I used my 24-105 f/4 L lens to compare.
All shots were taken at
1/200th
f/4
ISO 100
70mm
Faithful Picture Style
IS was off because the shots were taken with a tripod
The center focus point was used for both shots

I just wanted some second opinions on if my suspicions are correct.
If it does have a back focusing problem should I return it to B&H or should I send it off to a Canon repair center? Thanks for you help guys!

Here are some test shots.
70-200 IS Mk II full photo. Notice how the table and carpet are more in focus that my brother and his laptop!

70-200 center 100% crop. Notice how the table and carpet are more in focus that my brother and his laptop!

70-200 to the right 100% crop. Shouldn't this part be OOF since I focused on the center of this photo?

Did you get the last two reversed? In these two it shows the 70-200mm to be sharper, just the reverse of the first two.

6D, 5D, 7Dii, Eos R and too many lenses, flashes and aux. gear to list!

No they are not reversed. The second crop of the 70-200 is correct. As you can see, I think the lens has focusing problems.
Also remember that the crops of there pictures were taken from the photos at the top.

Hard to tell from those pictures.

Try again in more favorable light conditions if you want to test sharpness. And perhaps something less cluttered.

In my experience of owning both zoom lenses that you are testing...the 70-200 @F4 is much much much much sharper than the 24-105. Much sharper!

I say try again.

1. shoot something flat

2. get farther away, you are close to the MFD of the lens I am suspecting.

I think the 70-200 is one of the sharpest canon lenses, its not necessarily a good idea to compare other lenses to it, especially not a 24-105 ;)

Im not comparing sharpness, I'm comparing how they focus...

@TheMadMan Those shots are 100% crops from the two photos above them.

Also I think I need to reiterate this, The two crops of the 70-200 are taken from THE SAME PHOTO. Also, I used the CENTER AF POINT for both photos. That being said, shouldn't the 70-200 be sharper at the middle vs the right side if I focused on the center? What I'm trying to get at here is that from what I see, with the 70-200 being not focused at the center and being focused behind, I'm thinking that this lens has a back focusing problem.

I'm sorry but if everyone is claiming that the 70-200 mkII is the SHARPEST lens canon has then what explains this 100% crop from the center of a photo taken with the 70-200 mkII being so soft?

I found a focus test scale on this site. http://photo.net/learn/focustest/ (external link)

Here are the results...
I used the center focus point on my 60D for both shots at 70mm
Obviously a backfocusing lens if you ask me...

Take a shot, outside of something flat, with good contrast (under the AF point) in good light and a high shutter speed.

Unless the EXIF is wrong, all your samples were shot using a flash. How dark was it ?

If you get the same results, then, yes, it is backfocusing on your camera.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Take a shot at 200mm, you will find your lens probably front focusing. I am not kidding.

Agree with Bohdan. Man get outside, it has been nice weather lately here in bay area and shoot something flat in good light and then see where the problem is.

BTW - Nice pictures on your flickr. If you are in south bay, would be happy to let you test my 70-200mm f2.8 IS II.

I'll do that when the sun comes out more, but if I were under the same conditions in real life, for example my school's gym, wouldn't the results be the same?

It actually is still somewhat backfocusing, although not as much as at 70mm

Took some more test shots. This lens seems to be more erratic than I first thought. In warm light it back focuses as seen here.

IMAGE: http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh155/reefernate3/IMG_9107.jpg
and here
IMAGE: http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh155/reefernate3/IMG_9116.jpg
But in natural sunlight coming through a window, it front focuses as seen in these three images
IMAGE: http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh155/reefernate3/IMG_9118.jpg
IMAGE: http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh155/reefernate3/IMG_9160.jpg

The center AF point was used for all of the shots and they were all taken at 70mm at f/2.8 1/400th and ISO 200 with IS off on a tripod.
