this picture is like taking a picture of your thumb and asking how it looks.. Not sure what to say about this picture..

decrease the flash compensation and decrease the shutter speed...that would ideally make the flash illumination a bit less harsh and allow the background to be exposed more.

I was going for the sunset sky, but are you saying that the sky is less important and that it would be better to see the statue of liberty more clearly?

How he's talking about find the appropriate balance between ambient light and flash. There's no way to "see" the Statue of Liberty better since its back-lit by the sun.

Is that flash on camera? If you can't use an off-camera flash from the right with maybe an orange gell on it, use a piece of tin foil to direct the on-camera light to the right side & put a piece of yellow cardboard just out of the image to reflect the flash back at the subject.
Play with the concept a little. It's not as if the subject is going anywhere? ;)
