Am borrowing a friends Mk IV to shoot some basketball tomorrow. Anyone have a cheat sheet or suggestions for settings? (He shoots portrait and concert) I am a Nikon guy and he's trying to convince me it is better for sports than the D3 I am eyeing up...

Try this:

Manual mode, shutter 1/800 or 1/1000th, aperture = wide open or a little stopped down, and set auto-ISO.

I use center point personally with expansion, but you can ROF it. This works for me, hopefully it can help you, but others may have better setups. I shooot raw+jpg as well.

Here is the last HS basketball game I did.

Do you find your results to be good using this method? I've been debating trying this for BIFs when the I have greatly varying background lighting changes. Just wasn't sure how well the Auto ISO would work in manual.

Auto-ISO on the 1D4 is nearly perfect, except for 2 things:
1) You cannot set exposure compensation quickly and there should be a way to do that, like in Av/Tv. You can indeed go to a CF setting and micro-adjust your exposure though, tedious but it would work.

2) You cannot restrict its use of intermediate 1/3 ISO stops to be full stops. Makes sense in most cases, but it would be nice to have that control of locking down to full stops.

You know I saw number 1 last night and thought to myself, "This would be great for everyone shooting ETTR - add in here and it automatically is factored in". Then I realized that would be a problem if you were hoping to shoot more than or less than. However, im my case, where I generally add about 1/2 stop when shooting BIFs to give some leeway, it would work for me in that situation.

I like the full stops too.

Thanks for the input. I downloaded the manual but won't pick up the camera until this evening. Breezing over the AF set up, looks a little complex to master by tomorrow am

Just add that option to "My Menu" and you can get to it pretty quickly. Not quite the simplicity of just rotating the dial, but still a bit easier.

I didn't find the AF system to be that complicated. I use 19 points (vs. all 45) and use the surrounding points for tracking assistance. For b-ball, I would set the tracking sensitivity to 1 notch below middle, but may have to play with that a little depending on your seating location. Center point and roll away.

I have a smirk on my face when I read this. It has 40 pages for AF setup compare to several pages for Nikon.

FedEx dropped my Canon refurb off this am. Getting ready to take her out of the box shortly. Gonna shoot some soccer tomorrow.

On my 7d for Basketball - I generally go to M, ISO 3200, use the 85mm and with be 2.2-2.5 - custom WB. Single point, AF servo, Evaluative. Also - have the * set for AF and shutter for meter/release
