but youd think that the police would just say outright that they are making sure that its your own kid without hiding behind the pretense of terrorism.

It’s called walking on eggshells if they tell the guy the interview was “terrorist” related he is outraged, if they tell the guy they just want to be sure he has legal custody, he hits the roof as that is just short of saying we just want to make sure you are not a pedophile or worse, causing him to be really outraged and if they do nothing then later the little girl is found dead in a landfill the public after seeing the mall’s security video showing the guy, the little girl and a couple of cops having coffee and doughnuts at the next table over, will want those officers on a spit turning slowly over a high flame.

Malls are private property, just because they talked to you and not the other people doesn't mean they were wrong.

They are no different than regular police officers in that they have the right to engage in "selective enforcement" of the rules. Just like a police officer can see 10 cars speeding and he chooses YOUR car to pull over.

Interesting, the City of Fort Lauderdale Police Department actually has a unit known as the STEP (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program).

Their specialty is aggressive and impaired drivers, regular speeders need not apply. ;-)a

Yeah, they go for the ones that stand out most. In the malls they spot the SLR users, on the road they spot the red Ferrari and pull that over, rather than the black saloon behind it, driving at the same speed.

Interesting indeed...

At the other end of the spectrum, our Maricopa County Sherrif's Office (Sherrif Joe) routinely sets up sobriety checkpoints around the time of major holidays and they stop everyone...

That is to be in compliance with a Supreme Court Decision which requires the police when setting up checkpoints to be uniform in who they require to pass through the checkpoint, they can stop everyone or say every third car or sixth or whatever as long as they follow a set pattern.

This is intended to “deter” racial profiling.
