For those who own both, will a 5D2 shooter be satisfied with a 7D second body?

Forgive me but I've got a little different "bent" on this topic. I've read a couple hundred existing but they don't help me exactly.

I'm using a 5D2 for a couple years. Just sold my second body 40D because it always disappoints me and is no comparison to my 5D2. I shoot some wildlife with my "second" but still mostly landscapes.

The 5D2 is absolutely awesome. I'm worried that a 7D will leave me equally (or nearly) as disappointed as the 40D did.

For those of you that own both, does the quality of the 5D2 leave you disappointed with the 7D?

Thanks for your "patient and understanding" replies.

I have both and I do not plan on getting rid of either. They both come with me and I shoot with them about equally. Image quality wise the two stand together very well with the 5DII having about a 1 stop ISO advantage over the 7D. I do find that the body i reach for is dependent on what I shoot. The 5DII is used for portraits, landscapes, weddings/events and such while the 7D lives with a longer lens shooting wildlife, birds, macro and such. When I'm processing pictures most times it's hard to tell which body it was shot from unless I check the EXIF.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

The 7D may leave you disappointed in the 5D2.

I'm not joking!

That's a hard one to answer as I'm not totally sure if we think the same ;)

I was a little disappointed when I got the 7D mainly in terms of high ISO. I already had a 5DmkII and 1DmkIII but wanted something that sort of sat between when I only wanted to take one camera. I've since sold the 1DmkIII (for a 2nd 5DmkII) so the 7D is my only 'fast' body. It does a good job but I still like the photos out of the 5DmkII quite a lot more, however for wildlife then I'm very happy with how the 7D performs. All last year I lived in Egypt so the 7D was my 2nd body at weddings and actually that's when I started to realise it wasn't all that bad at all, it's just not quite the same IQ as the 5DmkII.

I will always take a 5D with me when shooting 'normal' things, the 7D only gets used for high speed.

Did I answer your question....? I'm not sure but hope it helps a little.

I have both. I don't use my 7D much at all, but it's a nice camera. The 7D definitely has more features, feels more robust and modern, but the 5D trumps it in IQ.

All good answers and truly appreciated. I guess they still leave me wondering since we have both opinions registered. They are encouraging, though, that the 7D might suffice.

Just tell me, if you have both, do you secretly, deep down wish you had 2 D2s? Or would you repeat your original purchase?

Whichever one I purchase, I believe it will be traded the second the 5D3 becomes available.

I think that the 7D offers features that are unparalleled until you move up to a 1D body. Rather than replacing one another outright, the 5DII and 7D complement each other as part of a kit.

I shoot with both, had a 40D prior to getting the 7D but I LOVED my 40D. I use each camera for different things, but as Gil mentioned it is pretty hard to tell which is which when I am processing.

I had both and I could tell a difference, I sold the 7D.

7D is a better body than the 5DII but the files aren't.

I just can't get my 7D images to impress me as much as the 5d (mkII or classic, used both) images. If I'm in a pinch and not shooting something that requires high fps, I'll go with the 5d every time.

I agree.. last weekend I tested out both to decide which I want to buy next month once I finally have money to upgrade, and the 7D blew the 5DII out of the water in my opinion

I used to own two 7D's.

Wanting to experience the magic  of Full Frame I sold one 7D to buy a 5D2.

Now I am considering making another sale and purchase.

Might be selling the 5D2 to get back a second 7D.

Just to help out the OP (and those of us who are curious), what was it for your style of shooting that makes the 7D blow the 5DmkII out of the water?

Here is another thought....

Is the OP looking for a " backup body " for his current camera body, or is he looking to expand his shooting capabilities?

IMHO, the best " backup body " to any primary camera is the same body as the primary. You are familiar and experienced with the primary, so picking up the same body as a secondary allows you to go on shooting without having to worry about any differences between the bodies.

However, if you are looking to improve and expand your shooting capabilities, than adding different body would be the way to go.
