I can't seem to get my lens to AF in any mode except Auto.

I know it works, but I can't figure why it stopped working in all the other modes?

I'm so afraid the answer is going to be obvious and embarrassing

I've never set that function. I checked the Custom menu but I didn't see that option; don't think I could have set it by mistake though.

I suppose your 60D is the same as my 50D, in which case it's custom function IV-1.

What happens when you push the AF-ON button on the rear panel? How about the * button?

-js

C.Fn. are next to the User settings. C.Fn III is Autofocus/Drive but there is nothing in the 5 settings there that look suspicious.

What happens when you push the AF-ON button on the rear panel?

Are you referring the the AF setting button on the top? That changes from "one shot" to "servo". It's set at one shot. AF on the menu is set to "Live Mode" but changing them doesn't make any difference.

Even in a relatively dark room the flash assist works to run AF when the camera is in "Auto" mode. AF seems to work perfectly in Auto mode, which seems to me would r/o a failed AF motor.

How about the * button?

There is no indication that it has been pressed; it doesn't appear on any display; which, of course, it does when I press it.

Look on the back of the camera near where your thumb rests. That is the af button. Press it and see if af works.

Yes! That activates the AF.

Then I got to thinking about the C.Fn settings again. ie C.Fn IV mentioned earlier; Operation/Others. (I was looking and the menu that had 4 dots; thanking C.Fn4, not about the 4 C.Fn functions I-IV)

C.Fn IV -1 changes the function of the camera's buttons.

That is C.Fn IV -1, which I just re-set to the 0 (default?); which makes the shutter button and the AF-On button "Meter & AF start", and the * button "AE lock".

Now it works. Strange, I don't ever remember changing those settings.

Thanks for the help!

Back button AF on the D60 is CF 02: 2, AF/AF lock
I just took mine out to test it. In the CF 2: 2 position it will AF when the * button is pressed. This separates the AF function from the exposure function (still on the shutter button).

Actually, the thread title notwithstanding, we're talking about a 60D, not a D60.

Michael, glad to see you're sorted out...

Just going by the OP's thread title.
Getting the camera properly identified is good.

Michael, glad to see you have it figured out....

But you might want to read about Back Button Focusing (external link) before going back to the more usual mode.

BBF gives you a lot more control over focus, than leaving it at the shutter release button. It just takes a little practice to learn to use it well. Since learning to use BBF some years ago, I hardly ever turn it off now.

The copy of 60D manual I've got confirms it's C.Fn IV-1, but - oddly - it doesn't detail the different available settings. On all the other models I've used, default 0 like you've set leaves AF at the shutter release button.

Ok, I see how it might be worth doing; I'll give a try.

Ya, I thought that was odd too. It shows the C.Fn IV -1 setting, but it fails to point out that there are 9 available options in that setting.
