So I'm going back to this venue tonight to shoot another band. So I reviewed my settings I used from this last music shoot to prepare my camera for tonight. I noticed I used the White Fluorescent WB setting. Should I have used the Tungsten instead? I did some minor WB adjustments in Aperture, and I always shot in RAW. Don't have a gray card so I want to just use the settings on the Canon 7D. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Here is the link of the last shoot I did at this venue. Peace

If you shoot RAW, it doesn't matter what you set the white balance to. You can change it in DPP.

PS. Just checked out the photos in your link. Good work. A little motion blur or DoF issues in a few shots... what ISO were you shooting at? Crank it up to 1600... effective noise reduction software is cheap.

I don't think this is 100% correct. True, you can set your white balance after the shoot, but I'm pretty sure that setting it in camera will let you get a more accurate exposure since the histogram is based on the JPEG thumbnail and the JPEG is based on the picture style.

Todd Owyoung (of I shoot shows fame) recommends shooting AWB, so that way you don't fumble for a white balance when shooting. Best to shoot RAW, AWB and adjust in PP.

I'd not heard of him until I read your post. He's got some nice stuff.

That said, I set my white balance to tungsten, and I'm not fumbling for anything while I'm shooting...

I suppose it was simple when stage lighting was mostly tungsten/halogen lamps -- and that included the followspots. So to me a tungsten setting made sense. But today LEDs have moved into the game -- most of the MAC movers are LEDs now -- and LEDs can give of weird light -- and you'll occasionally get Xenon arc spotlights, which can't be dimmed -- just mechanically opened and shut. So there's a whole array of stage lighting out there to mess with you. Never any fluorescent. I only stay on auto WB because I don't know any better.
Sometimes I convert to tungsten in Camera Raw and then warm it up a little. I wouldn't like to think that my shots looked like that though -- but I'm sure they wouldn't be that blue.

all good points, especially about the LED's. They are so hard to meter, post processing is fine but I found the auto focus can get screwy.

AWB all the way, convert to tungsten

Actually you set it on a different WB to Auto. With Auto the WB might change. To be safe you have to be consistent with the colours
