I just picked up this lens, and I am happy with color and contrast. It is sharp! I took a look at the cost of the Canon tripod mount and it runs about $139. There are less expensive mounts that range in price from $13-45 or so.
Are any of the less expensive mounts worth looking into? I would hate to lose a good lens, because I stuck it into an unreliable tripod mount.
There is an inexpensive one by Opteka and a more expensive tripod mount by Fotodiox. Of course, there is the Canon tripod mount.
Does anyone here have experience with mounts, other than Canon?

I'm also interested in what people have to say about this topic.

I've been thinking of getting one too. I also found the price to be a bit on the high side.
And it does the job using the camera mount, but it just looked awkward :p

On the other hand I am contend in using handheld in most cases.

I picked up a 70-200L f/4 non-IS on the used marker a while back...it came with an aftermarket tripod collar. Seems to be okay, unfortunately it doesn't have a brand name labeled on it...just says "For Canon tripod mount ring A (W)" on it. Best I can come up with is the (W) may mean "white" for white lenses. The ring is a few shades lighter than the lens, though, and the marked centerline seems to be off by a hair (doesn't quite line up with the mark on the lens). If the lens didn't come with it, I wouldn't have bought one. If you're intent on getting one, I wouldn't recommend buying a dirt-cheap one, though...I'd be a little leery about it possibly being made out of some trash metal.

I got one off of e-bay on the cheap, but it seems solid enough. I've had no problems with it.

OTOH.. I've never felt the need to put the f/4 on a tripod with the collar. It is so light that I've never felt it was front heavy.

I just bought the collar because I could ;)

I got one from an outfit in Florida. Great price, well made, well finished, works perfectly. The locking mechanism is just like Canon's.

I always mounted my 70-200 f/4 to the camera body and the body to the tripod.

Never really saw a need for a tripod ring on the 70-200 f/4.

The 70-200 f/2.8 is a different story.

My 100-400mm IS L needs a tripod ring and Canon provided one with it.

I got an opteka mount for my old 70-200 f4 and it worked well and color matched fairly well also.

I got a aftermarket one on ebay for my 70-200 f/4 IS, it is not so good in terms of quality but for $20 and free shipping, I think I can live with it. The canon one is nice but not worth that kind of money. I haven't use the mount as much as I thought I would, the 70-200 f/4 is light enough to mount it to the body and body to tripod.

I bought the China knock off as well, it works just fine and matches the color almost perfectly. However after shooting with this lens for a while I found I do not need the collar as the lens is just too light to warrant the need. But for the price it's nice to have in case you do need it.
