This is an honest question:

Could you explain the difference? I've never shot a truly manual lens and rarely shoot my prime(s) in manual focus.

@OP: I agree with you that most of the support for either camera on POTN is anecdotal. To me, this is fine, as it wouldn't be sensible to expect everyone to do true side by side comparisons of the 7D and 5DII.

The smaller viewfinder coupled with it's focus screen make critical manual focus at large apertures extremely difficult if not impossible. The 5d2 with it's larger brighter viewfinder coupled with the EG-S screen allows for quite easy manual focusing even with lenses at 1.4

have had both, 7D will get the action shots with its excellent AF, 5D2 has better noise at higher ISO.

Why dont you just buy both of them and compare the pics yourself. I wanted to know what the difference was like so I got the 5D2 to go with my 7D and I looked for myself. Guess what? They both take great pictures if you use them right.

Gotcha.. I may be mistaken, but does the 7D have a larger viewfinder?

EDIT: Nevermind... did a little looking... 5DII is larger.

If you have to ask which is better in such a broad statement without better defining your question, most likely you're not ready for either of these more advanced dslrs.

Fischer Price on the other hand may have a camera that may match your skillset.

Really not trying to sound like a smart*ss, but asking which is better is akin to asking how dark is dark.

Consider shooting a Heron in flight carrying a massive fish in its beak.

Will the 5D2 get the shot? Yeah it may, but it will limit you choice of shots.

I used a 7D at it's hight FPS for the shot, ended up taking 23 frames, all were in focus and I had a beautiful series of that bird as his wings went through the full range of motion from fully extended down, to fully extended up.

The 5D2 would not have given me as many frames to choose from, and the focusing in a shot like that becomes an issue.

The 5D2 *might* have been a tad sharper with a minor increase in IQ, but when it comes to telling a story, or documenting something like the wing movement of a heron in flight carrying a bird ...... sharpness and IQ take a back seat.

Both my 5D2 and 7D will shoot that bird in flight, but when it comes down to choosing the better image for the story, the 7D gives me more choices.

I may keep the 5D2 and relegate it to still life/studio/tripod work .... that is where it seems to outdo the 7D.

Why do people try and compare two different cameras designed for two completely different jobs?

The 5D MK2 does excel in certain types of photography over the 7D, and vice versa, what you have to ask yourself, what type of photography is most important to you, and percentage of what you do most to determine what body suits your requirement.

Why is this concept so difficult to understand?
Get one or the other and/or get both. :)

A year later, sell and get a 1D III or IV

The 7D is a 100% viewfinder though. Also you can change out the screen pretty easily if it is a problem. I have manually focused with the 7D without any more noticeable issue than any other camera, but I don't do it alot to really be able to state that the 7D is better or worse than anything else.

I knew I read something that made me think that the 7D had a bigger viewfinder. That's what it is... the 5DII has a 97% or 98% VF?

Is another 7d/5D/5DMII thread necessary, really? I stated earlier in this thread how the op could have done a search for similar threads of this nature. As far as I am aware the op could have posted in those threads since they aren't locked to my knowledge.

Of course they do, but the 24L is not wide anymore and the Tse lenses just are not the same. Sure you can mount them on the 7d, but their usefulness decreases.

We will agree to disagree.

Ever try to focus a manual lens through the 7d viewfinder. Not an easy or joyfull experience. Fast manual glass is virtually impossible to focus accurately.

Never had a problem with it. No more challenging than using my 5d2 or 1d4.

+1.

Can't stand this type of commentary. If the subject bores you, don't read or post in the thread.
