I'm 6' 6" and the Manfrotto 055XPROB with head attached is plenty tall enough for me without having to extend the center column.

Thank Veemac, I'll check it out.

Although, I have to admit, I'm now leaning towards a Gitzo GT3541LS with a RSS BH-55 on top. There goes the budget! Buy once, cry once, right? ;)

I'm inclined to ask what you will be sticking on top of it? Your requirements will be very different when comparing a Rebel and 50/1.8 to a 1D with a 600/4
I've got four different Gitzo CF tripods and each has its use.

+1 to that tripod, bought one after reading that review. :)

I'm 191cm tall (thats 6'3") and the tripod with ball head is good height for me.

Thanks for the link! The Feisol CT-3371 sounds like what I'm looking for.

Max height is 155cm. I'm 195cm (6'5") tall and I use an Induro CT313 (external link) which has a maximum height of 159cm. My eyepiece is exactly at eye level.

Thanks for the link to the Induro tripods; I can't believe I'd never looked at them before since the entire line is quite tall.
