It's cheaper that way. Downside is almost all external drives are 5400RPM green versions. So if you absolutely have to have a 7200RPM drive, then it's going to cost you dearly. That's not always a good idea. Newer external drives (the inner drives themselves) sometimes come with proprietary connectors that no longer allow extraction for desktop mounting. You either use it in the included case, or it's worthless without some type of adapter.
