On my Windows 7 machine, I have my main storage drive on the computer, and I also have a portable USB drive.

I have identical directory trees on both drives, with the tree on the USB drive consisting of empty folders with nested (empty) sub-folders.

Now, I want to copy the jpg's only from the computer to the USB drive, leaving the RAW files uncopied.

I know I can open up a couple windows to corresponding sub-folders, select the jpg's and drag. The problem there is that I have dozens of nested sub-folders (maybe even 100+), so that method would require a lot of repetitive input from me.

Does anyone know of a technique/application that can automate the process? That can copy ALL the jpg's only from one drive to another, keeping the jpg's in the correct folder/sub-folder on identical directory trees?

Microsoft SyncToy or Microsoft Richedit both free and great. I use both.

Free File Sync. More configurable than SyncToy. But ST is good.

So, any of those apps will automatically distinguish between jpegs and Raw files and only copy the jpegs over to the proper sub-directories? I'm askin' 'cause I don't know squat about it:)!

If you are familiar with a command-line interface, you could try this:

1) Press Start on the taskbar.
2) Type in CMD.EXE where it says "Search for programs..." and press Enter. This will open a window into which you may type commands.
3) Enter this command: xcopy /v/s/e/d d:\*.jpg c:\photographs
My example assumes that your USB drive is your d: drive and that you keep photographs in a folder c:\photographs. If necessary, substitute a different drive letter for d: and/or a different folder for c:\photographs.

You can set SyncToy to include or exclude any file type. It's a pretty handy little program.

It's just a basic file move using the extensions (cr2 vs jpg vs tiff or whatever)..... You could write a DOS script that would accomplish this as well.

Thanks, I will give that a try. Just so I am not completely ignorant, what do the v, s, e, and d switches do?

Once you get the command window open, type "help xcopy" and it will explain the various parameters/switches you can use.

Easiest way is to go into the specific drive hit CRTL + F (for find) type .jpeg (if they are .jpeg) or .jpg(if they are .jpg) and hit enter. Once searching is done hit Select All or CTRL + A and copy to new destination.

OK, that sounds even easier. Question: Intuition tells me that that will drop the copied files all into the same directory (folder). Is that true or will they (as I need) automatically populate into the corresponding nested directories and sub-directories on the destination drive?

I doubt you can do that using the basic Find and/or Search tools. I didn't really check out XCopy, did you try it?

Ditto the xcopy command. Interesting there are still a few of us around who know how to do that.

The switches tell xcopy to walk the tree and copy all jpg files from the source to the target (d: I think it was) including all subdirectories.

Try SyncBack Freeware, which you can select to backup some or all files / folders or drive; once or schedule:
