I am planning on replacing my dell laptop with a 2011 Macbook Air 13in with i7 processor. Will this computer run Lightroom 3 well? I don't do much editing outside of lightroom, so i don't think i will need a powerhouse computer either.

My current laptop runs lightroom 3 well, but sometimes rendering could be a bit laggy. it is a 2008 Dell xps 1530 at 2.4ghz and 4gb ram ddr2 and 7200rpm hdd.

I am planning to give my mom this laptop since her's is starting to die. And I want a very lightweight laptop for class, but powerful enough to be able to run lightroom (probably the one of the most demanding tasks i'll be doing).

It will be a lot faster than your old Dell, but I think you will find it's and i5, not and i7 :)

But, it will still lag when rendering previews, importing and working with the adjustment brush.
I use a faster version of the i5 in a laptop for tethered shooting, but still find I need my desktop for serious editing.

But for working in Library mode and basic editing, it will be a lot faster than your old Core 2 based computer :)

If you switch to Aperture it will be much faster than Lightroom because Aperture uses the HD3000 gnu for many of its tasks.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

I have this with LR3.

Works well.

I also have a desktop with Q6600, SSD (for OS and programs), HDD (for pictures), 4Gb RAM. The 13" MacAir previews and renders much faster using mRAW files from a 1D mark IV.

I'm not using PS nor iTunes in the background.

It's great for portability on the road. Satisfied with my purchase
