Hi guys,I'm in need of some help please...

Ok so I've only been shooting for about a year now, and I love to shoot wildlife, especially birds of prey. My current set up is giving me some ok results, but I need more reach..! But I have limited funds.

I would love to get a 500 / 600 but could not raise the money,
So my thoughts are to get a used 300mm 2.8 with the 1.4x and 2x converters....

How is the iq with the 2x ..?
How is the autofocus with the 2x
How much better is it than my 100-400 at the long end...

Looking forward to you comments and advice

Jason

300 + 1.4X = 420mm f/4
300 + 2.0X = 600mm f/5.6

Just my opinion the 300 + 1.4X is a match made in heaven and will be superior to the 100-400 (minus the zoom of course.)

The 300 + 2X is on the ragged edge of Ok. Some find the IQ acceptable but others (including me) feel it's enough of an IQ hit to warrant looking at alternatives. In my case, often needing a lot of reach for aviation subjects, it pushed me into getting a 500mm.

I'd suggest renting a 300 and each TC and see how each combo strikes you.
