While in Europe I noticed a person who had a tripod that was very compact. The legs were not more than half inch width, and they looked likethose old school antenas on radios. The color was stainless steel. I am not sure if this type of a tripod is even available in the US, but I thought I would ask. it looked like a very compact tripod, which I am not sure stable it is.

Thanks,

This is about as thin as I've seen in the local photography shop. I wouldn't trust my gear on it.

I've seen those at the local camera shop. Scary. It's just some tent poles ferchrissakes! I wouldn't trust those either. However, if I didn't like someone, I would wholeheartedly endorse the purchase of said tripod.

I remember buying something like that in Hong Kong while I was there on holiday - used it very briefly and held the neckstrap at all times in case it fell. Got a couple of useable shots that otherwise would have missed but no way would I use it if I had a choice of a decent tripod, or even a good travel tripod.
No idea where it is now - I possibly left it there!

(bought a Gitzo G0012 mk2 in Singapore which is a thousand times better)

The tripod was carried by a person from Asia so they very well could have bought it in Hong Kong. It looked sturdy.

It was much smaller than the tamrac zipshot that Nathan put the amazon link.

When you say small, do you mean thin or are the legs small, too? A table top tripod like what Rene links you to? These can work for compact cameras just fine.

Rule of thumb: thin or small = unstable, especially if the legs are long.

You can't get around it. Some of the best tripods are sizable. There are certain designs that make them sleeker, but usually at the cost of reducing the maximum load. Carbon fiber can make them lighter. Keep in mind people hang sandbags on their tripod sets to make them heavier for more stable support.

I'd never put a DSLR on one of those flimsy slimsy tripods.
