Hi all,

I was just told that my insurance would not cover my home based photo business outside of my apartment. I only do my computer work at home so this is a big problem as I need coverage for when I am doing weddings and other shoots. The company will only cover me for business in my apartment and only up to 5k (form 15k)

I was paying about $300year for tenant and home based business insurance. They said I could schedule my gear separately but that wouldn't have liability, or get a commercial plan which is about 600$yr an a little steep for me.

Does anyone have any suggestions on who I should contact or companies to go through? I am in northern BC.

Thanks for any help!

I use an insurance broker instead of a local agent who I am told can be limited in the number of different insurance companies they can offer you. I was working in Montreal a few years ago and started using Dale Parizeau Morris MacKenzie (external link). I have been very happy with them and I keep my list of gear updated with them. I even buy extra health coverage from them when I am going to be in another country. I live in Alberta now and their products have a seamless look to them as nothing has changed other than my address. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I would fill out their request for information and see what they could do for you.

thanks!
I have noticed that all the brokers offer most of the same companies so that might be a problem when I go shop around.

I have used some of their services for years. The lady that handles my account gives me outstanding service. I'm not sure what their website has to do with their ability to offer insurance service. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend their service to anyone. Like anything else in life one can always find something that they might like better and there are alot of options in the insurance business in Canada. If someone has the time to review every last one then more power to them.

Thanks for this info, Sheldon! I'm just starting out, located in SE BC ... I've been thinking about finding out about insurance but haven't got to it yet ...

I worked with a pro in my area this summer, and she said that most photogs don't insure anything except their big-ticket equipment and liability because rates are so steep.

I'll make a note of your broker. Cheers!
