I do like more speed... but I don't like new formats that are not backwards compatible... oh well, the price of progress I guess.

Hopefully firmware update will allow current bodies to recognize new cards.

Well looking at the image, I dont think a firmware upgrade will matter, its a bit different footprint..a bit longer, and not as wide. Maybe an adapter..

When it ceases to be fun, it will be time to walk away

If anyone is going to ditch their old crappy cards, let me know. I'll send you a PP envelope to mail them to me and I'll take care of them for you.

Hmm new one = 125mb/s, old one 167mb/s.
On new one could go to 250mb/s or higher.

An adapter would need a fair bit of electronics as the interfaces are quite different.

I guess I will hold onto my current CF cards and maybe buy a few more. Main question is, though, when will the camera industry, e.g., Canon, Nikon, etc., actually implement the new standard. The card manufacturers are not going to start making them unless there is a market for them = new cameras that will accommodate them. My guess is that it could be 3 to 5 years before this new standard makes it into the "field". Too many folks have got heavy investments in old CF cameras to mean that the old ones are going to go away any time soon. My 0.02ยข FWIW.

Cheers,

WesternGuy

And with one simple announcement, the Canon's 1D X has become obsolete.

(just kidding). More the reason to pick up a 1D X since it may be the last 1D series to be able to use the current CF format. :D

Not possible. It's using the PCI Express specification which will be different in hardware than current CF cards.

Nah. Next iteration of the high end pro bodies will be dual cards CF and one of these.

The memory is no different, the interface is well undersood but faster. Its an easy and quick change. And when your pushing 18mp * 12fps you want a lot of bandwidth.
