Hey guys. Recently I've noticed that my 20D cant capture the full photo at higher shutter speeds. I've read a few things about people with similar problems, but they all seem to not be shutter speed dependent. Mine is completely shutter speed dependent.

Heres a few examples to show what i mean. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it. The camera still works great in every other way, so I'm hoping its not too major. But it does seem to be getting worse.

Thanks for any help

If this happens with different lenses then it looks like some type of shutter assembly issue. Not even sure if Canon services the 20D or not? There are several places that I have seen listed that service older equipment so maybe you can find that info somewhere..... Sorry.

It's probably not worth the expense to repair it. Assuming you don't have a specific need that requires such high shutter speeds, just shoot slower.

Or an excuse for a ND filter!

johnb43, you're in the same boat I am. My 20D is having front focus issues and is totally not worth it to repair it anymore.

I'm thinking of going straight to a 5d2

i cant afford a 5d2 right now. i was planning on waiting for the 5d3 to come out (who knows when) so that the prices of 5d2's would come way down, but maybe il just get a classic. i want the mark2 for video though. but i agree, i dont think it would be worth it to spend much money on a 20d at this point

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

AFAIK, Canon still services the 20D/30D.

Chances are, buying another 20D would be cheaper than the repair. This might be a good time to step up into a 40D, or trading the 20D into CLP and getting a refurbished 50D.

johnb43, look at the 60D body from the Canon Loyalty Program. I got mine a few months back and the bottom line was around $640 for the body. Unfortunately in our area of SE Pennsylvania, there aren't many places that carry the 60D although a month back HH Gregg had some. They are located over in the shopping center where Wegman's is located (just west of Exton; business Rt. 30).

The details of the CLP are at https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=948785.

The Canon site showing stock is at http://shop.usa.canon.com …gory_10051_10051_-1_29252 (external link). Page 2 shows the 60D in stock at $800. By trading in some Canon product you get an additional 20% off or $640 net. Note that you can trade in virtually any Canon camera, even a broken point & shoot. In my case I traded an old G2. It worked fine and I was prepared to tell them that it would no longer charge batteries. Some people have been told the camera must be non-functional but that was not my case.

Front focusing issues might be fixable with a simple cleaning and adjustment.... Might not be all that expensive, if that's all that's needed. Since it's an older camera and out of warranty, look for a local camera repair tech who will take a look at it and give you an estimate. That will probably be cheaper than sending it to Canon for that type of service. (It is possible that an AF componenent is failing, though.)

Shutter issue more likely will need replacement of the entire module, which is more involved, requiring more labor, and there is the cost of parts, too.

However, the image examples above are not typical of a failing shutter.... They look more like a slow/sluggish shutter, rather than a broken one. It might be possible to have it cleaned an lubricated by a local tech (Canon service wouldn't do that, they'd just replace it). I haven't tried cleaning and lubricating a modern Canon shutter personally, so really don't know what's involved or what's possible. Take it to a local tech and talk with them about it.

Or just use this as an excuse to upgrade... If you have a battery grip on the camera, you could go to a 50D and still use it and your current batteries/charger and memory cards.

Not that it isn't a nice camera, it is. But with 60D, you'd have to replace all those items (it used LP-E6 batteries and SD memory).

This is a good point. 10D - 50D use the same batteries, chargers and grips, so if you have a ton of them lying around, moving up to a 40D or 50D could potentially be smart. I would personally move to a 50D over a 60D solely for having in-body microadjustment.

Memory card type is also different for the 60D - SD instead of CF.
