I can't see the issues you mention....may be time to have my eyes checked or are the issues really hard to spot?

I do see the fringing but I thought all mid primes wide open experience that to some degree. This is called LoCA right?

Will you consider the Sigma? Maybe try it at a local shop first?

Look at the 70 on the picture of the lens. I think the color there is being created by the lens and not the lighting. You normally only see this in the corners on rounded surfaces at wide aperatures. You might have gotten a bad lens.

Get the Sigma. If it has focusing issues, get it calibrated.

I've shot with entirely too many 50s and I own the Sigma. There's a reason for that.

frugivore is correct. Photozone tests all the lenses for LoCA, and what you've observed in your 50/1.4 is plainly visible in their tests (though I don't actually see a particularly bad example of it in your test shots). If this sort of thing bothers you in general, fast primes shot wide open might not be your thing.

This picture shows it well enough.

First, the numbers on the lens "28 35 50 70" etc. All different colors except white in the middle. (focus was on the "1" in "100").

Then there is the odd triple bokeh on the top.

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

i can see the fringing ^

but the "triple bokeh" could be caused by motion blur ala the image stabilizer text above?

Sigma will give you less fringing, but it will still be there in the more demanding shots...

White on black and is pretty demanding as far as LoCA goes

Well I'll do more careful testing now that I calmed down :)

yeah instant love for me with the sigma 50. guess I was fortunate too in that I got a "good" copy as they say....albeit I have no reference for anything but.

Yes, I can see it too, the 5 in "135" has the green fringe, and the 5 in "50" and 3 in "35" have obvious magenta fringe. I only meant to say that I didn't see anything worse than what I expected to see based on the photozone and similar test shots. In other words, your shots are consistent with the tests and reviews I've read while considering getting this lens myself.

Ya know, uOpt, I'm surprised that you're not this picky with your 85mm f/1.8. Unless you have some sort of miracle copy, there's mad PF on the lens at and near wide open. Much worse than you're showing from the ef 50mm f/1.4...

I've never had an f1.4 lens that did give some color fringe on black/white transitions when shot at wide open.

I think you are just looking for problems. f1.4 is not going to be perfection on this lens, but in my experience f1.6+ was really good. I preferred it to my 85mm f1.8 (and now I've sent them all away and use an f2.8 zoom, but that's another story...)

F1.4 in the real world:
