I bought the 100L today but did I make the right decision? Ive wanted this lens for almost a year. The reason I ask is I'm now having seconds thoughts. I'm really interested in macro photography. I've used my buddies copy and it blew me away. But I have the 100mm range with my 70-200 and I bought a set of extension tubes as well. So I'm hoping someone with experience with both lenses can tell me the 100mm L is a much better lens at 100mm & for doing macro photography. To be honest, I really wanted the zeiss but I can't justify the price difference. (When all is said and done, I pretty much got the lens for almost nothing and yet I don't have that feeling inside one gets from buying a new lens.

Price: 886.00
Better half said she give me 700 towards the lens for Christmas and bday gift.
20.00 cash back when I linked my Girlfriends site to adorama
And she also gets cash back since I went through her site.

And to top it off Adorama has a 400.00 rebate on a 444.00 printer when you buy a T3I which with kit lens was only 712.00. (daughters Christmas gift)

Buyers remorse? I go through that each time I buy a new lens :p picked up a 85 1.2 and 50 1.2 within the past month and each one I get that feeling that maybe I shouldn't have got it.

Just get out, shoot some and enjoy it. The 100L macro is a killer lens, hell throw the ETs on the macro for even more magnification (working distance won't be much)

Too late now...you bought it. These questions need to be asked prior to hitting the buy button.

You definitely made the right decision. You like macro, the 100 is THE lens.

If you wanted it and you have a use for it why question it?

Really only YOU know of you made the right decision. A bunch of random people in an Internet forum telling you that you did or did not make the right decision will not change the fact that you did or did not.

So go out and have fun with it and then ask yourself if you made the right decision

You won't be disappointed. I have a 70-200II with both crop and FF bodies. The 100L still plays a major role. I had the 100 non-L macro but traded up. The 100L does everything it did, better. A small IQ gain, better build quality, and a really helpful focus-limiter for close macro. But where the 100L really shines is the IS. I find myself grabbing the 100L as a replacement to the 70-200II when I want to carry a smaller bag or I'm going somewhere where a big white isn't quite right. BTW - you mentioned tubes. If you already have them, you will love the results with the 100L.

The 100L is a great lens and a hell of a lot lighter weight than a 70-200 with tubes.

I bought the 100L a while back cause of the price + I had the money. Realized I didn't need the IS, so I sold it and bought the 100 USM Macro and a 1.4x TC III. Happy camper now. :)

I've got 2 70-200L 2.8's, the 100 sees far more camera time than both of them combined. It's a great lens, you're going to enjoy it. It opened up a new world for me (small stuff, bugs, etc).

Thank you guys so much. All of your points are very valid and I appreciate your advice. I now have that excited feeling back in my stomach!!!! This actually was the first purchase ivevever done where I took the free shipping instead of having it shipped overnight or second day air. ( I really have no patience.).

Thanks everyone!!!!!

Its a great lens. I sold my 100mm f/2.8 macro lens to buy the 100L and I think its a much better lens. I got mine at the beginning of this year for $807.00 shipped. Here is an example picture with this lens hand held.

Terrible decision, feel free to send it to me, I will even pay for shipping :D

In all seriousness it is a great lens. You will really enjoy it. Plus it has the special AI-Servo macro mode with the 7D :D

I bought my second 70-200 2.8 II 1 week ago after having sold mine about 1 year ago and im still having buyers remorse on the purchase.
The Canon 100 macro is an amazing lens and there is no way you are going to do what that lens does with your 70-200 at 100mm. You are comparing a Macro 100mm prime specifically made for macro and one of the sharpest Canon lenses to a zoom lens.

If you like macro photography and you needed that lens, enjoy it because its as good as they get...
