I know the looks aren't the most important thing...But really, the grips don't fit all that great.

On the side where your hand grips the camera, it's nice and flush. On the other side it isn't and it looks bad.

There really isn't any way around it to make it look better it's just the ergonomics of the camera body. Personally I think the BG-E9 grip (for 60D) is the only one to match the lines of the camera. Who knows some people might think you have a 1D series full frame. ;-)a

The Sony otoh looks interesting.

No complaints about the one on my 7D. Really scratching for something to complain about this morning, aren't we?

lol, maybe.

I just can't stand how easy it would be to make it look better, yet it's not done.

Indeed, Sony probably makes the best vertical grips. From the -7 class and up, they're are sealed against moisture & dust, too :).

The only thing I wish is that canon would add some of the additional controls that I see appearing on some of the 3rd party grips. Things like a second joystick and suchlike which serve to greater enhance the ability to use the grip in portrait orientation for longer with even less reduced control over the camera.

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

Just because it's a tool doesn't mean it can't have a more appealing aesthetic. Etorre Bugatti understood this, even the anvils and bench vises in his workshops were designed by him to be simple, elegant and functional. Steve Jobs understood this too. Why some people insist that functional things should be ugly, or that no effort should be expended to create elegantly designed tools is beyond me. As photographers we strive to find beauty in the simplest things in life, yet deride others when they expect the same from someone else.

I don't really notice honestly, especially with an L bracket on it, which there is 98% of the time.

I'd like to see a complete set of controls on it for vertical orientation, but it looks like that will be taken care of when I get my 1DX - problem solved! ;-)a

Your average person doesn't notice the shape of their toilet, yet there is a whole design department at Kohler dedicated to better looking porcelain thrones.

Hey, I started out with tub drains just like you guys. But now... now I'm designing shower handles. Soon I'll be on faucets; then toilets. And pretty soon, I'll make kitchen sinks, and that's when the big bucks start rolling in.

Actually, I'm a lot more cognizant of things that concern my ass, than I am about the spacing between my grip and camera body. :p

if you're talking about the thickness of the bottom of the grip, the 1 series does the same thing:

IMAGE: http://a.img-dpreview.com/products_data/products/canon_eos1dx/shots/front.jpg?v=1266

if you're talking about the weird missing piece one the left (from the back/users end) below the input doors, then yeah, they leave that out, but so what? Consider it lighter and cheaper and that it's a "pro" not that it's ugly and a "con"...

I'd trade in the grip for a Canon flash like that Sony! Looks pretty slick!
