I had a bird appear in my yard for only a few minutes, but was able to get a shot off. I was hoping I could get an ID on the bird. The size of the beak is very small in proportion to the body

Looks like a whip-poor-will. Mostly active at night and in the early evening hours you can hear them singing "whip poor will" off and on.

I maybe wrong, but the way the eye looks i think it is a common nighthawk.

Its a Common Nighthawk, the primaries travel to the tip of the tail. Whip-poor-wills wings do not reach the tail tip.
