Didn't know where else to post this, so....here goes.

I saw this on Adoramatv and thought I would share it. Never thought of looking for something like this. I just played by ear on scene.

Anyways, here is a website which tells you when and how long the "golden hour" is by your location. They also have an app for iPhones, as well. The app is $5. Looks pretty cool

Here is the website link (external link)

Technology is cool! I went and bought the app for iphone and it works well. Automatic location if enabled. IT gives the bell curve of sunlight and breaks down by the hour when the "magic hour" is.

Tried the link and it hanging up.

I use sun-calc to see sun angle at various times of the day over google maps. Real helpful IMHO if I haven't been to a place I want to shoot. With satellite info on top you can see if buildings/trees will block sun or not.

same here....I get the error message "a script has stopped responding" and it locks up Firefox!

I've always just judged it by eye....works well enough for me...

Kinda hard to plan for tomorrow evening by looking out the window at noon today, though. I use Ephemeris, from Jon Sachs, on my HPC and PC. Realistically, anything that'll tell you when and where sunrise and sunset are going to be will let you be in position, even if it doesn't use "Golden Hour" or other similar buzzwords in its name.

I want a seat where I can see the hands of the pianist

Don, youre killin me with this statement and your sig! If you wanted to see the hands of the pianist it would require a bit of planning and preparation to ensure that you got the seat you wanted/needed to be in the right place at the right time and see what you wanted. Thats not unlike what we are talking about here. Planning and preparing to be in the right place at the right time facing the right direction.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Usually any old weather website suffices for the necessary information. I like to poke fun at there is "an app for that" crowd. I agree planning to be at the right place at the right time is essential to get the image that you want.

That's the app from this website. Works decently well.

You need a website to tell you how long an hour is?

I just go to a weather website and look up when the sun sets/rises every few weeks.

Right. The beauty of TPE [The Photographer's Ephemeris] is that you get both the time and crucially the direction of sunrise/set, moonrise/set for any location in the world you choose and any future date - including the local topography.
