Heres my story from my blog ( I know some people here dont like to click on links)
The sky was clear when I went to bed so I figured the shoot was on. I set my alarm for 4:45am, which ended up being way to early. I could see the moon from my kitchen window and at 4:45am the moon was still white and just starting to get dark on the top half of it. I set my alarm for 5:30, but couldnt get back to sleep. Primarly becasue the postiton of the moon was bothering me. I was hoping to drive down to the beach and get the beach in the foreground and the moon as the background. After laying in bed for 15 minutes I decided to get up and go. I put a couple of t shirts on and a sweatshirt, I know 45 degrees is warm to most of the country right now but for southern california its freezing, especially for a native Californian.
I was driving towards the beach and had a tough decision to make, the moon was too high and too far to the north to get my beach shot. So I made a last second decision and decided to go up to a high point where I could get a clear shot of the moon. I arrived at a park just as the moon was starting to turn reddish-orange. It was freezing out (I think its time to invest in some gloves). The moon was turning red just as the sun was coming up, I knew that there wasnt going to be much time to get shots of the moon, as the light from the sun was already starting to wash out the moon. There were a couple of other people at the park. At my first location, two people with point and shoot cameras stood a couple of feet away from me taking photos with the flash going off and their cameras making all sorts of weird SiFi noises….I decided to move. My new location worked, in fact it gave me a little more photo options. I took a couple more shots and then moved to a different spot. Its always important to take different angles of a subject. I found myself laying down on the cold ground in a prone position, I was attempting to get a shot with the grass in the foreground, leading to a tree with the moon in the background but the angle of the grass wasn’t dramatic enough to make a good shot. Soon the sun illuminated the sky to the point that the moon could barely be seen. I took some photos of the sun rise and then called it a morning.
All shot on a 7D with the 70-200mm f/4L
