This is my first time shooting basketball, as well as, any kind of indoor sport. I have a lot to learn. I shot soccer for the same high school and I think basketball is much harder to shoot. Not only because it's indoors, but also it seems like the action is much faster. I used my Sigma 70-200 2.8. I shot Manual with my settings at 1/640 at 1600 ISO at first, but then switched to 1/500 at 3200 ISO. I don't have anything to shoot to setup a custom WB, so I just shot my white sock and used that. I believe my next lens will be the 85 1.8. I own the nifty fifty and don't think the AF is fast enough, but I'm going to try it at the next game. I pretty much have free reign of where I need to sit on the floor, so these shots I sat on the end line just to the left and right of the backboard. Unfortunately, I didn't get there until just before half time which didn't leave me much time to shoot. Any feedback/helpful tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you! I have another girls game to shoot on Tuesday and then a boys game to shoot on Wednesday. I'm gonna keep trying different things to find out what works the best. I'd like to get the Canon 85 1.8 and would really like to upgrade the body to a 7D, but for now I'm just going to shoot with what I got and try to get as much experience as possible. All in due time, I guess.

Those do look good Mrwilt. I hope the gal in #1 got called for traveling. ;-)a

Not much to add to the images but watch your vertical and horizontal lines. When there are vertical lines in the background, that is what I'll align the image with. If there are not vertical lines then I'll adjust what ever horizontal lines in the background.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks! She was going for a layup, so I don't think they called her for traveling. Actually she had a lot of break aways - was stealing the ball left and right and going in for layups. I believe she was the high scorer for the team. I'll definitely pay attention to the vertical lines. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.

I like these, especially for a first time. You're right, the 50mm doesn't work very well for basketball, or anything else moving for that matter. Make sure you carry another lens, because you will soon put the 50 away. Color looks pretty good too. #4 is probably the weakest shot of the set.

Thanks. I read here on the forum that the 50 would probably be too slow. I'm in talks with the AD at the high school about funding a Canon 85 1.8. I have another girls basketball game tonight and the boys play tomorrow night. Thanks again for the feedback.
