It got up to near +40F today, so I headed out on the ice near the tip of an island exposed to the big lake. We have had very little snow and the ice out there had formed and been broken many times by the fall storms and was left in beautiful array. I'd guess it's at least 10" thick now and while solidly in place, the lake was booming continuously like distant cannon fire. And sometimes not so distant, as I would take a step and the ice would crack like thunder under my feet and shoot out across the lake. If you've never experienced a frozen lake, it's ice expanding in the cold, it is a phenomenon to behold.
