I have long been interested in photography, but I have focused mostly on landscapes and wildlife. I am trying to further hone my skills to better be able to capture great photos of people. I finally talked my son into letting me take some pictures of him this weekend, which he is very pleased with. I would love to get some C&C so I can improve though.

I really liked this pose. I sure do wish now that I had waited 20 more minutes until the sun was bearable if he faced it, or not so bright on his back.

Thanks - I have done almost all of my previous photography with natural light, so thinking about the flash isn't coming natural yet. It needs to though - it obviously would have helped on the last two. I have just bought the Canon Speedlite 430EX II. I guess it is time to start using it.

Regarding the WB, I've noticed I seem to err on the warm side. I need to work on that too.

Thanks for the critique.

QUOTED IMAGE

For shots like these - especially at this time of day - you should put your subject in between yourself and the sun. With the sun at his back, shoot in manual mode and expose for the subject. No flash or reflector is needed.

my fav is the first one, although I might have preferred to have more space for him to be "looking in" to. As it is, there is more space on the opposite side, but still, it is a great image. Like Bryan, I also like 2&5. tough age to photograph boys, but he seems quite comfortable, so nice work!

Thanks to everyone. This kind of feedback is valuable.

Sue, I had been hoping to hear more on the composition of the shots, so thank you for that. That is the one that I also had the same thought on, but I really like how it looked. I also deliberately left the metal of the bench in the picture. I will probably try this same shot again, but next time have him face the other direction.

Charro - thanks for your advice too. I am going to try this one again, but it will have to be later in the day. I can't get in the right angle here to get him between me and the son and still get the doc in the picture. Later in the evening it should reduce the crazy shadows though. I would have been extremely happy to have that golden glow on his face, but he couldn't bear the sun in his eyes.

Bryan, thank you! Those are my two favorites too. He likes #6 alot, but is happy with the whole set.

Pretty nice shots. Fill flash can only get you so far if it's on camera. A reflector instead is the cheapest alternative, especially for a full body shot like #5. Downside is you need an assistant or a lightstand+arm. But this will add a little pop to the subject.
