Did anyone ever experience the "IS hunting after focusing" issue with their 24-105L's?

What do you mean IS hunting? Like shaking back and forth?

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

The IS only locks in after the auto-focus

That sounds like a good thing. Wouldn't it save you from some battery drain?

What do you have C.Fn III -4 Lens drive when AF impossible set too?

...might be the AF hunting, not the IS.

IS takes half a second to activate, too. Maybe you are getting focus lock before the IS has time to fully activate?

I think you are going to have to define what you mean by "hunting" and "locks in" after AF.

IS doesn't "hunt" or "lock in", it keeps moving around to compensate for camera motion, if it stops moving it isn't working (unless the camera is absolutely immobile of course).

There is a delay on any IS lens whilst the IS "spins up", this can take a second or so and it may well still be spinning up when the AF has done it's job. This is normal and any movement should be the IS working, not "hunting".

The view through the lens should be more stable once the IS is up to speed, than before you half pressed the shutter release, of course. If the IS is jumping around, then that sounds like a trip back to Canon for repair.

Could you be more specific about what you are actually seeing?

Ok, here's the issue. After the shutter is activated, IS makes a click exactly one second after the shutter snaps. I was selling the lens I got as a part of a 5D kit, and the buyer said he had the same thing happen to his 70-200, and Canon said it's a defective IS mechanism. Everything works to my knowledge, and I've had 3 copies of this lens before, never paid attention to this "clicking".
That's why I was wondering if its the IS mechanism is defective, or the buyer :D

So, you take a shot, then take your finger off the shutter release, then the IS clicks?

Sounds to me like it's just the IS shutting off after you release pressure on the shutter release. Have you tried taking a shot but keeping the pressure at the half way point, so keeping everything active? You should find that you can trigger the shutter but there won't be a click a second later because the IS is still active. Wait another couple of seconds then take your finger off, and see if it clicks just after that.

I can't recall noticing mine ever clicking after a shot, but it's not something I would pay attention to.

OK. I've just been and stuck my 24-105L on a body and tried it. After I take my finger off the shutter release I can hear the IS whirring away for about a second, then there is a click as it shuts off. It's not a loud click, but it is definitely a click. If that is what you are hearing, then it's normal, just the IS settling back into it's fixed position.

I think it is your buyer that is defective, not the lens. Is he just saying that he doesn't want it, or that he will take it at a reduced price so he can afford to get it "fixed"?

Sounds to me like the old 'invent a fault and get it cheaper' scam.

Thanks, Sandpiper! That explains it. Glad to see someone with the same gear try it out. So looks like it's normal, saving me a trip to the Canon @Irvine.
What I was hearing was a noticeable click exactly a second after the shutter is released. I will try it with my 100L when I get home today. I never personally paid attention to how many clicks I get. Especially with my Sigma OS :)

The 100L is better about the IS start up but it will be similar to the 24-105L. The IS on my 300mm f/4L IS is terribly loud when it starts up and is in opperation. There is a definite click to it when it starts and stops. Just the older IS versions. Same as USM used to be audible, but now it's super quiet.
