Hey folks!
I've really enjoyed the Urban Photography threads about city streets and scenes! I know that when I can get to a downtown area, I'm packing kit and looking for shots!
But, here's my situation: I live in the outskirts of a middle-size town that is itself on the outskirts of the metropolitan area of Portland, OR. In other words, I live in the suburbs!!
Now, it's always been a fairly simple matter to hop into my car and drive to my little downtown or a bit more to get to downtown Portland, maybe drive to a Park and Ride and hop on the LightRail, or maybe find a downtown parking garage, but all quite doable.
But, as some of you may be aware of, a beloved family member wrecked my Honda, the insurance didn't cover replacing it, and at this point in life I can't afford to replace it!
So, maybe some of you have seen the thread I started, Bikography -- The Biking Photog In Action! Well, that sums up my current transportation for my photography, except for the infrequent occasions when I'll make extensive use of public transportation to get, say, to downtown Portland.
Well, today I did an outing, my 5DC with the 24-105 in my backpack, and as I was in the process of all this I was thinking: as of recent, my outings have been out and about the suburbs, not the downtown urban shooting I've been used to!
It's a totally different type of atmosphere and shooting and subjects! Like today, it started with Fall colors:
A strange suburban scene:
A freeway overpass:
And an urban-suburban business establishment:
Now, nothing dramatic there, just an hour or two out with a camera, but the thing that struck me is that we have a different range of subject matter here, and so often we suburbanites are so glued to our cars as we go "places" that we never stop to smell the roses:
And sometimes you see things in the suburbs that could make you just stop and look, if you weren't glued into that car:
So, in the past (before my biking days) I'd go out occasionaly for "walkabouts" and get some of these kind of shots, but now I guess it's gotten more "meaning" for me...
Anyway, I hope this thread can be an encouragement to you suburban-dwellers out there! Get out, smell the roses, and take photos and post theme here! Whoo-Hoo!
