Anyone compared the Sigma 50-500 OS to the 400mm f5.6L USM prime?

Hi,

I understand that a prime will most of the time be sharper and quicker than a zoom and that the 400mm is one of the best - I thought I would put that out straight away.

In fact my lens history includes a Sigma 150-500 > 100-400 > 400mm, so I'm familiar with the old tech Bimga and how it compared to the 100-400 and that for 400mm only teh prime was better than that, however times have changed and a new model is in the mix, especially as from what I've read its much better than the old 150-500.

I have seen a few reviews of the 50-500 OS but have yet to see one that includes the 400mm for direct comparison of IQ and AF speed.

Never had the bigma but had 100-400L and 400mm f5.6 for a while. Then had 300mm f2.8 IS and 500mm f4 IS. The 400mm f5.6 is as fast to AF as any canon supertele, maybe a bit faster due to its large MFD. Also you not going to get better picture quality for any lens in $1000-$1200 range. The next step up is the big boys costing lot more.

curious as well, for now the 70-300 will serve as my longest lens but it seems 400mm is the cut off for anything affordable.

Cheers - its a shame no-one seems to have tried both, as I said I've moved up to the 400mm, but the OS was quite a jump apparently and I'm willing to drop a little IQ and some (but not tonnes) of AF speed for the flexibility it offers.

since you said you had the 150-500OS you could kinda use this comparison as a round about way to figure out the differences next to the 50-500OS..

Cheers again - yep I'd searched on that as its the closest I could find - although dodging the non OS versions of the 50-500 vs 100-400 can be tricky.
