I took this candid photo at the weekend while waiting with my family to board the steam train:

IMAGE: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7005/6500260769_bf090bbd57_z.jpg

As soon as I took it, and had a quick glance at the screen, I knew it was special (in my eyes). Posted it on a few forums, and flickr. A discussion started with lots of very positive comments. It also made flickr explore.

This got me thinking.

Who was in the shot? Why didn't I stop and ask her at the time for an email address so I can send the photo to her?

Anyway, Sunday night comes. I decided to put a little page together on my site with a close up of the ladies face, and another shot I took of her daughter facing forward.

Testing the 6 degrees of separation theory, I then put an appeal out on my wife's facebook account (I don't have one). Two hours go by, the 6th person to comment posts up saying she is positive she knows the lady in the shot. Five minutes later I get an email with the ladies email address. She loved the shot :D

I sent it to her, free of charge. She is delighted!

It's nice to be nice ;)

Good job. I'm glad you found the subject, I'm sure they are thrilled with the shot. It's a great capture.

It just goes to show that timeless photos are still possible.

Canons to the left, Canons to the right,
We hold our L glass toward the light,
Digitizing in a snap reflective glory
That will forever tell our imaged story.

Thanks :) Gives me a good feeling seeing a shot being put to use, rather than bunched up in amongst my other 1000's of shots.

Exactly.

Right place, right time, right light, right camera, right lens, right settings, lots of luck. It's one of my top 5 shots of all time.

Awesome shot. Reminds me of those sad movie scenes and the kind of scene I can get from a book.

That's an awesome story! There are a few things in the photo I would've liked to see differently, but since this is just a candid, I think you took this photo very well.
