After reading the threads on here about the issue of the 580EXII`s being fried when used with the FlexTT5`s, I have come to the conclusion mine are toast. All I can get out of them is a preflash, the flash confirmation light will not light, even though the EXIF indicates the flash fired, recycle time with new fully charged batteries is around 10 seconds, and after firing the unit approximatly 6 times in a row the batteries are extremely hot. The question now becomes where do I send them for repair? One is out of warrenty and the other is very close to expiring. I am considering going with the RF modification PW offers. They are listing three different companies that do this. Has anyone had this done and where did you send it? The companies are, Precision Camera, LeZot Camera Repair and Michael Bass Designs. Any thoughts on these?
Also if I`m reading this correctly CPS does not do these modifications? Any information you all can give me is greatly appriceated.

I was under the impression that PW would do the RF mod if they fixed a bad 580 for you:

"We charge $30 USD per flash to repair the blown IGBT and tweak the flash tube alignment so it is much less likely to ever fail again. While we have the flash open, we would also offer to do the RF mod to the flash (so it doesn't need the AC5) for $15 USD"

From one of the threads here on POTN.

Granted, if you can get the flash fixed under warranty you save the $30, but if it happened to me I'd want it repaired by someone who knew what the underlying problem was.

If you're doing the second flash out of warranty though it would still be much cheaper through PocketWizard to fix and RF-Mod them both.

If you do go with PocketWizard let us know how they go, and also if you ever have the problem again (hopefully not).

There is the chance that Canon would cover the second one under good will. Warranty coverage was enough to push another recent toward Canon repair, but personally I think I'd rather pay the $30 and know that it's right. Well, I suppose you never really KNOW, but to me it would be a much better bet.

The case I mention was just about the IGBT repair. Once you add in the RF mod, it probably is cheaper no matter what. $90, say $100 or slightly more after shipping, to fully repair two flagship flashes to better than new. Almost makes me want a 580! :)
