Kiapolo, love that 2nd shot.

Thanks. I'm heading back to Maui tomorrow. Went last week for a work overnight trip. Going this weekend for play! Going to hit up Haleakala for sunrise this time.

Kiapolo, my wife and I are spending one month in Hawaii later this year and will be spending one week in Maui.

We will be staying at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel which is is Kahului. Do you have any idea how long it would take us to get from Kahului to the top of Haleakala in order to watch the sunrise?

We are going to the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island to watch the sunset over the island, and it would be great to offset it with being able to watch the sunrise over Maui.

As we have never previously been to Maui, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Doofuss,
Kahului is where the airport is and your hotel is probably at Kaanapali beach in Lahaina on the other side of the island. It should take you two hours to get to the summit from Kaanapali beach and that is if traffic is flowing to the summit. Lots of people go to the summit for the sunrise and in the dark that road winds a lot. I think I have driven from Kaanapali to the summit in 1.5 hours but that is going at a very good clip and no traffic at all. I went up right before sunset and left around 10/11pm. You should leave for the summit at about 4am and dress like you are going to the arctic. It is very windy up there and cold. There is lots to do on Maui and it depends on what you like to do and see.
It is also very windy and cold up on top of Mauna Kea and the extra 4,000 feet did not make me feel so great. The clouds on the horizon that day made for a rather uninspiring sunset :-( We went with Hawaii Forest and trail tour which I recommend. We did both the Mauna Kea and Volcano evening tour with them. You can drive up to the top of Mauna Kea but if you have any problems with your car, it will cost hundreds if not a thousand to get it off the mountain. You would be on the hook for any damage as you are not supposed to drive up there. At Kiluea crater, I would walk out on the Chain of craters road to see the view, it is better than at the Jagger museum. http://www.nps.gov …nyourvisit/keanakakoi.htm (external link)
