I like those colors from the sunrise @ Haiku.

I sure wish I could find pics from my first visit in 86. I was 17, just out of high school, and my parents brought my brother and me to Oahu for about ten days. As luck would have it the hotel next door was hosting the Ms. Teen USA pageant and my brother and I met a lot of young ladies (not that anything came from it, however, as I was a complete idiot around girls back then). But it was fun trying anyway. The funny thing is I stepped off the plane wearing a pair of jeans, a heavy metal shirt and a flannel shirt tied around my waste. So lame. The rest of the trip I wore ugly short-shorts and sneakers. Such a bad dresser then (and not much better now).

That first trip was mostly so I could surf. It was in the summer in Waikiki and I took to the water there like a fish. I loved it from the first minute. Lots of surfing/lots of waves, and I had been warned to be polite to everyone.

I normally don't have problems in Hawaii, even when surfing, because I'm friendly and try to meet everyone out in the lineup. I learn names, shake hands, and then people are nice to me. Plus, it's more fun that way.

I had two incidents on my first trip there. The first was when I rented a huge longboard so that I could surf like the Duke. I long admired those long, rolling waves at Queens and Canoes (dead center of Waikiki Beach). In the old photos you would see Hawaiians riding unbroken waves on huge boards while tourists rode in the outriggers that were steered and directed by Hawaiians. I wanted to experience that, so I rode several waves.

Then, on one wave I steered close to an outrigger full of tourists, I waved at them and they waved back, just like in an old movie or photo, but as I was about five feet away from them, the BIG Hawaiian guy steering told me to move away (his concern...rightfully so, was for the safety of the tourists). I was a bit arrogant in my surfing abilities so I ignored him, continuing to surf along side the canoe.

Then I fell and the board shot right through the tourists in the boat and went to the other side. It didn't hurt anyone, but it sure scared everyone and when they came paddling back out I knew I was in for it. The big Hawaiian guy motioned for me to approach him. I knew better than to decline his invitation so I humbly paddled over to him and he loudly berated me in front of the boat of tourists. The tourists joined in and they verbally went to town on me as I apologized profusely. Then the big Hawaiian guy said, "It's time for you to go in. You can come back out tomorrow."

So I did. Lesson learned.

The second incident was my brother's fault. He was on a sponge and dropped in on a Hawaiian surfer out at Populars (surfspot on outer reef in Waikiki). The Hawaiian guy told my brother, "You and your friend better not catch one more wave while I'm out here." I was about to just feed my brother to the wolves but decided to stick by him. We paddled to the channel and sat obediently for an hour. Then the guy said, "You kooks can have some waves now," and then he went in.

You live and learn.

Since that first trip I've been back four times and haven't had any problems with locals. It's always a great time.

Stepping into Haleiwa Town on Oahu's North Shore is like stepping back in time 30 years...The place is so low key and laid back compared to the hustle and bustle of Waikiki Beach.

And by the way, the little restaurant in this photo, the Grass Skirt Grill, does the BEST chicken teriyaki burger you will find anywhere on this earth. One of my favourite places to grab a feed from.

the road at the top of Aiea loop trail and campsite. Rolleiflex 2.8fx. Shot cheap european Holga 120 400 iso film. Quality is ok, not TriX or Tmax. Developed with a homemade coffee soup called Caffenol CM. Good stuff better contrast than D-76.

We are heading back to Maui Feb. 19th so I am starting to get the Hawaiian itch
