Looking forward to exploring the islands, especially after seeing the great images.

This is from the Hilo side of the Big Island, our new home.

...and everyone thought that I would never leave Colorado.

Great shots everyone! Pretty sure we already have a few malasada shots so figured I'd try something a little different from the mecca of malasada bakeries.

After a 30 year return to Waikiki ...
It's very much the same but with 4x the people, cars, and traffic.
More Grey Sand - Less importing of the better white sand on the northern shore.
Same wall to wall hotels and condos - Athough Mona Lona is to put up a new section per newspaper.
Most noticeable was the large amount of Homeless and Bums on the Beach - Sad.
It is understood that Texas {and some other states} traded homeless for institue prisoneers.
Thats a good move for Texas et al but it really ruins the beach.
To me it was degraded and just a bigger zoo.
North Oahu is as pristine as ever ..

It would be cool if you could find some old photos from your trip 30 years ago and post some here.

People Go to Oahu for exotic and infrastructe.
Oahu and WB was original honeymoon for us so was Kauai.
Time to return for 2nd H'moon.
Wife likes shops resturants, tourisy sites, and mass civilization more than I.
I prefer more selcluded resorts - Inc. North Shore Oahu, Big Island, Maui, Kauai.
Not sure which Island next but Oahu will not be on list for at least another 30 years iff still around or can even move.
The above Rocky Beach is just North of Banzai Beach.
It is where the famous Banzai Pipeline is.
In Dec - April the surf goes to 30+ and is the Surfer Center.
The pics below are more of the Surfer area now issolated Beach.
The worlds record for surfing was recorded there with a 108 foot wave.

Some interesting info on Banzai Pipleline waves ..
The reef at the Pipe is a flat tabletop reef, with several caverns on the inside, creating a giant air bubble that pops on the front of the wave when the wave lurches upwards just before breaking. There are also several jagged, underwater lava spires that can injure fallen surfers. Sand can accumulate on the reef at Pipeline, and that can cause waves to "close out" (meaning the hollow tube of the wave collapses all at once and thus is impossible to surf). A strong swell (a formation of long-wavelength surface waves) from the west clears out the sand in the reef, and after that, a strong north swell can give rise to the best waves.

There are four waves associated with Pipeline. The left (which means the wave breaks from left to right from the perspective of a watcher on shore) known as Pipeline (aka First Reef) is the most commonly surfed and photographed. When the reef is hit by a north swell, the peak (the highest tipping-point of the wave where it begins to curl) becomes an A-frame shaped wave, with Pipe closing out a bit and peeling off left, and the equally famous Backdoor Pipeline peeling away to the right at the same time. As the size at Pipe increases, over 12 feet usually, Second Reef on the outside (further out into the deeper ocean waters) starts breaking, with longer walls (the unbroken face of the wave that the surfer slides across), and more size. At an extreme size an area called Third Reef even further outside starts to break with giant waves.

what? didnt you see the recent pic? we go oahu for malasadas at leonards  well my reason is because the gf is there. we talked about hoping over to hawaii though. she's been to kauai few times already so she's not interested in going back, but rather check out other islands.

anyhow, those are nice pics of Kauai. it looks so beautiful. thanks for sharing :)

Thanks, the first shot of the statues is from Pu'uhonua o Honaunau or "Place of Refuge" and the second shot is just some random beach access. Both are on the Big Island along the Kailua-Kona coast.

i see. thanks for the information :)

Akaka Falls, Big Island, North of Hilo. Our first time there was yesterday. I'm just happy to be able to see places like this, let alone shoot them. This is a quick conversion while I sort out color issues on my monitor...might be time for a new one.

Edit: Man, the compression I used for the web killed this one. Wish I could post the video from the 5D II of this place. Turned out awesome.

I like Oahu, I get bored on the other islands. First visited in 1977, and no doubt it's changed but I still love it and go back about 5 times a year.

I won't drive there, walk or I ride the bus. Meet some fun folks on those buses.
