Hi everyone,

Just a quick questions in case anyone has more info on the new Pixel Kings - are they backwards compatible with the old Pixel Soldier triggers?

I have a set of the older Pixel Soldier triggers (before the Pixel Knight came around) and accidentally damaged the contact in the transmitter (i believe its something that can be repaired) - but i was wondering if with the pixel king i can fire off the soldier's receiver as well?

Thanks!

No not the Soldiers, only the Opas are comtatible with the Kings.

You could probably wire up a PC sync cord into the Soldier Tx (instead of the broken foot contacts) and connect that to your cameras sync port (if it has one) and fire the King and Solder Tx at the same time. You could mount the Soldier on top of the King Tx hostshoe just as a place to mount it.

Hi elv,

Thanks for the reply. My mistake, i should have clarified that when I meant broken contacts I meant the ones connecting the CR2 battery inside as shown in the image below:

Here's a few things that I've noticed:

1. When i press the battery down there seems to be some connection and the red light flickers on for a second, but nothing beyond that. No amount of pressing or shifting the battery around will get the light to come back on. Only seems to replicate when i take the battery out completely and put it back in. For a second the light will flicker on as i press the battery in and again... nothing.

2. I've tried using various conducting strips of metal to try and see if I can bridge the connection manually, but failed to do so. I probably just suck at this.

3. Tried using 3 different brand new batteries, confirmed they work on other devices and still the same as in (1).

At this point I've almost resigned myself to the loss of the $66 I paid for this. It all happened when I started having some misfires and accidentally jammed the battery in because I thought it was loose - no one to blame but myself.

However, if there was SOME way that the Rx could fire while using maybe the new pixel kings, i would be ecstatic. Is there any way to pinpoint the frequency and perhaps adjust it?

It is not simply a question of frequency. The King system uses tranceivers at both ends, and the "TX" (the transceiver dedicated to mounting on the camera) builds a map of the available "RX" units (transceivers dedicated to driving a flash), and their mounted flashes.

Each RX unit is part of the unified programming of the system. If the RX does not talk back in the required code, then it is ignored as not compatible.

With the Pixel Kings, we are way past "simple one-direction triggers".

P.S. Those battery holders are atrocious!

$45 for a new trigger and receiver set on Amazon.

Cheaper then buying the King although you could build a new battery holder. If you don't want the hassle throw it up on Ebay as parts for $20 and someone might be interested. The frequency adjustment if it was adjustable would be glued solid so it wont fall off when dropped. That was a big problem years ago with pagers getting knocked off frequency.

I would contact Pixel (if the seller won't help) as this is clearly a weak point in the Soldiers. I haven't heard of other cases but Clive had to repair one from new. Its not something easy to fix.
