Oh, what a coincidence. I'm currently in need of a root canal that's going to cost ~$2000.. imagine the toys I can buy with that money :(.

Anyway, you gotta do what you gotta do. If you need the lens then it's worth it.

Root canals are over rated. I would go with the 70-200....

if he fixes it he can get a lot more than 1,200 for it...i say if you don't want to pay to fix it...sell it for like $1,000 including the email/description from sigma saying how much it'll cost to fix it...and then put the money towards something else...if you don't want to spend the $640...

Sorry, but you better do a little research on what a used
Sigma 120-300 F/2.8 sell for. Here is one for $1100 on FM

I've found a couple non DG version that sold for less. And some DG's for about $1375.

I honestly thing it's worth getting fixed, and keep using it, but he sounded
like he might want to replace it with something different.

that one is a great deal though...keh has one listed for $1,600...there's one listed here for $1,900(although i think that's high) one recently sold here for $1,650...ebays completed listings show 3 at $1,500, $1,800, and $1,868...

i do think my estimate was high though...i'd say working condition would be like 1300-1500...somewhere in there...

i agree if it were me i'd get it fixed...but i dunno...now after seeing your link i think he should sell it to me for like $200...:) kidding of course

Most of the ones listed for those prices are the newer EX DG versions
And the ones I looked at were only a couple years old or less.

Since his lense is over 5 years old, and the EX DG version came out
in 2006, I'm assuming it's the older non DG version and they aren't
selling for as much. But if he can find the right person and get more,
all I can say is go for it.

And the newer OS version seem to get some pretty good reviews!!
Maybe make him an offer he can't refuse :-P

why does every problem with a sigma lens get used as an example of why they all have problems: :)
Especially if it's a non-DG, these are relatively old lenses so It's not too unreasonable to think that it would need a repair. That does sound pretty pricey but, as mentioned, it's a pricey lens to begin with.

I'd say your options are either sell as-is with issues disclosed or preferably to get it fixed (and then sell if you wish). It's a nice lens though, wish I could have afforded to keep one.

OK, got the lens back from Sigma and took it to a local shop. There I'm told that a part that costs $540 would have to be ordered from Sigma plus $175 labor. Now I know I would have been better off leaving it with Sigma. Odd thing is that the guy at the local shop said that he would have to put $400 on his card for the part that I would need to pay in advance, which means he's probably marking the part up $120. So back to Sigma. At least now I know. :-(

I do auto repair and this is why competition from quality non-OEM parts is a good thing, when only the manufacturer supplies the parts they have no reason to price them reasonably. If bought part by part that lens must be 3 times the original price.
