This bridge is fairly difficult to shoot at night. I tried again, and learned several things. The lights that illuminate the cables aren't visible until the sky is quite dark, so it's almost a waste of time to shoot with a slightly bright sky. The bridge is just a silhouette and doesn't have the grandeurt that the lighted cables provide. And when the sky is correct the brightness is fading so fast that it's impossible to shoot an entire pano at the same exposure. (Perhaps in the summer when the light change is slower.) Also, when it's dark enough some of the surrounding lights are quite bright, and the exposure needed for the rest of the shot means that those lights blow out quite severely.

On the other hand I noticed that the sun sets almost directly behind the bridge from this shooting location, so it may be worthy of another attempt if I can be lucky enough to get a good sunset.

For now, though, this is the best I can do, and it's not that much better than my last attempt. But I'm happy that this is a 2-row pano, so the resulting file is 3450x11200, which means that I could print it 12x36 for a decent-sized 3:1 pano.

That is a great photo. I think that having some of the lamps show as warmer yellow and others as cooler blue white add to the picture. I bet you could print at 150ppi and still have excellent definition. That would make a large pano, though I'm not sure how large you wanted to go. You could try with a small cropped section that includes cables and illuminated windows on a 4X6 or 5X7 before committing to a large (read more expensive) print. Congratulations on your stitching, any misallignment from either distortion or parallax would show up on the cables. I can appreciate the care you have taken to put this together. Nice job.

Looking between the two pictures, you've definitely made a great improvement Scottes. I love the architecture of these modern bridges, and you've captured this one nicely.. i bet the print would look even better :D

Thanks for the comments. I'm still debating about printing this one. While I do think it's better than the last I'm just not happy with the blow-out on the sign on the left. The sign is over-exposed and makes it look lousy, in my opinion. But I think the only fix would be to go HDR and merge multiple exposures. This would not be easy, especially since the desired light doesn't last long and changes quickly. I may just have to wait until summer, when the light change will be more gradual, and re-shoot with HDR in mind.

Then again, Jeff's idea of printing an 8x10 is a good idea. I really should print a couple sections at 8x10 and see how it comes out.

Nice shot Scott. I like both of your renditions of the scene. I do see that this one is an improvement. I would if it were mine clone out the blown out sign and see how it looked then. Or is that cheating?

I think this shot is a huge improvement over the first.
Could you dodge/burn the sign to get it to come into play the way you want it?
Also, just out of personal curiosity, are these three pictures stitched togeter at the points shown in the photo below?
Thanks for sharing...

Cloning out the sign would *definitely* be cheating! Heresy, in fact!
:-)
I just couldn't make myself do that. I'm more likely to go back three more times, take multiple exposures, and spend hours and hours over the computer merging those exposures. (For some reason that wouldn't be cheating. Go figure.)

Right now the sign is so over-exposed that it really looks lousy and very "fuzzy" kinda. It's just *so* much brighter than anything else in the scene.
Here's a 100% crop:

Pretty bad.

DigitalMDX, this was a 1x7 pano in portrait. I don't know why I said "2 rows" in the original post - I did take shots for a 2-row version but I haven't stitched it yet. And the sign isn't any better, so I may not.

Scott I admire your persistance and determination to get the shot just right. I cheat, but then I call the shot and "image" not a photograph.
