Nice review, Chas. One cool accessory for hand held TASCAM is this external battery pack which can be very handy in situations where you need to record many hours but without AC power source:

Yeah, I saw that battery pack, that's a great idea! I like the fact that Tascam really thought a lot of these things out.

What's nice about this battery pack is that it's designed so that it can be attached to the portable recorder on the one side and screw onto a tripod on the other side. Compared to the CP-E4 external battery pack for my 580EX flash, it's a bargain price wise.

Have you checked out those after market (eBay) flash battery packs? I've been wanting to get me a pair of those for my 540EZ's. They go for about $35 each.

No, I have this thing about OEM... :) But there are some aftermarket brands that are mentioned quite often on this forum. I don't know anything about 540EZ, but make sure it can take an external battery pack.

Yeah, it was the top of the line flash before the digital bodies came out. I use them on my 40D and 7D as fully manual flashes. They have the external ports for those battery packs just like the new flash units.

Chas - I have a question for ya. What's the best method of recording using my TASCAM: 1) Peak Reduction; 2) Auto Level; 3) Limiter; or 4) Off?

My primary recording need is my son's violin performances. I can get the recorder set up just a few feet in front of him on a tripod, so the distance is pretty fixed. I've been using Peak Reduction and raising the recording level to around 75, but I don't think this works very well.

Mike: Look at the Zoom H2N. It's brand new and addresses all the issues of the H2 and adds some bomb diggety extras.
