Was considering a 17-40 F4 but now I am reading that lens isn't so great on the 1.3 croppers. I don't shoot wide often so 17 is plenty enough on the wide end. Thanks for any suggestions.

Not sure, but, why wouldn't it be good on a 1.3x body?

The 17-40 is fantastic on my 1D4 but isn't quite wide enough for some shots. I picked up a 14L I fairly cheap and that took care of my needs. Also, Sigma now has a second version of the 12-24mm but as of yet I haven't come across any definitive review discussing the extremely soft corners that plaqued the first version.

I used my 17-40L extensively on a 1D mk2 until I bought a 5D mk2. I loved the pictures I'd get with that lens. It's tied for my favorite lens I have right now.

I neglected a third option and that would be the Nikon 14-24 which is a superb lens with a Nikon-EOS adapter. I believe this setup runs in the neighborhood of $2300 but I've seen some awesome images posted using this setup on FF/APS-H bodies here on POTN.

After taking a short half day hike with my 7D and 17-55 IS, i started thinking of how canon doesn't seem to have a really good answer to the 14-24....

I spent yesterday thinking of selling all my canon gear and getting a D700 and the 14-24.

but alas, I am still using canons to fight my battles!

I keep hoping Canon does answer that lens, Nikon is really making Canon look bad with it. I really hate using adapters and non-OEM lenses but if they don't come up with something in the next year or so I may go this route. I am not switching back to Nikon bodies, with my lens collection it would be a nightmare.

The 17-40 and 16-35 are both awesome on APS-H.

thanks for the replies. I think the 17-40 would fit the bill for me just fine considering cost for those rare times I need something a bit wider than 24.

The 17-40 is a wonderful landscape lens on my 1D4. One more option for the times you might want to go wider is the Sigma 14mm prime. They are no longer made but pop up here, on FM, and on eBay occasionally in the $500 range.

And what do you think about the discontinued Sigma 15-30 3.5 4.5?

The 17-40 works fine with an H sensor.

17-40 is my most used lens on a 1DII, love it...
