Hi all, it's christmas time and I feel like buying myself a present :)

I love my sigma 50 but been wanting to upgrade. Main use will be portrait + walkaround. I don't mind shooting f2 as i find it's shallow enough for portrait and hard to get both eyes in focus anyway.

So which one would you prefer? 50L or Zeiss 50 MP.

Any comments is appreciated :D

since you have the sigma 50, go for the Zeiss. (keep both)

i'm waiting for a canon 50 1.4 II or excess money for the 50L to use in conjunction with my 50/2. :)

If you're keeping the sigma, then go with the zeiss!

Be aware that the Zeiss colours are said to be different. In their marketing materials, Zeiss claim to match the ZEs to each other, but not to Canon.

On a side note, I saw the zeiss 50 MP in silver for M mount. I can get an adapter to use it on my 5D2 right? Any pros/cons? Maybe losing focus confirm???

I meant the light transmission characteristics, not the barrel.

You can't use the Zeiss 50 in the (Leica) M mount. ;)

50MP is my favorite lens for portraits and walkaround. Too bad I had to sell it about a month ago, but will be buying it back at some point. It is very versatile lens due to its performance at f/2 and 1:2 close focusing ability.

And to add. I also had 50L and didn't like its performance at close distances - it was simply too soft. With the 50MP you can get really close and still have excellent performance.

The ZE50 MP is great - distortion is controlled very well, sharp at all distances even close up and the 1:2 macro comes in handy. I cant say how it compares to the 50L as Ive not used that lens, but I can certainly vouch for the quality of the ZE 50 MP.
