I always have to laugh when I read you guys rave about the MaxiLite. It's so old-school.

I have 2 and use them but seldom as a key light. It's just a deep 16" reflector that creates specular highlights.

The shots above could have been done with a Speedotron 20" reflector or a Profoto Magnum and you wouldn't know the difference. I shoot with all of them, I'm speaking from experience.

Not criticizing your taste, so please don't take offense. But if you take a look back at hollywood shots from the '30s and '40s and you'll find a lot of the same look.

I say yes on the profoto magnum making the same light but I dont own profoto

I don't think anyone has ever said that the maxilite is an unprecedented light modifier that has never been created before and has no equal. It's a relatively cheap modifier that gives results that are distinctly different from a 7" reflector or a softbox/beauty dish, and therefore gives another option for quality of light.

Additionally, the Profoto Magnum costs more than twice as much, and the speedo 20" reflector is a rather different shape/type of modifier. The fact that this modifier can mimic the fresnels of the 30s and 40s is pretty damn sweet given the price and the portability/durability.

Yeah it does

Not quite sure what is wrong with "old school" or people liking a modifier that exists among other brands, but I find it a bit odd that you chime in to say that you "have a laugh" at people who like this modifier. And no, my feelings aren't hurt one bit by this comment (I don't think I've ever even posted in this thread before), I just find it a rather pointless and condescending bit of nothingness that you've posted with your nose firmly aimed at the sky.

I got that vibe too. I dunno it seems random to bring the hate/negativity

A lot of my obsession with the Maxilite besides the type of light it puts out is the fact that I don't own a reflector of any kind. I only have softboxes and sometimes I just don't want soft.

I don't own either one of the ones you posted. You have the right to post what you think and that's fine and I take no offense.

It makes me money and I like what I can do with it and how i can control it.

Not at all what I was saying. You're choosing to be defensive when there is nothing negative in my post.

You chose the negative connotation to the terms I used. I didn't.

I am glad you tell me what I am doing :D I would not know otherwise :D

I thought I may have been off base/reading this wrong, so I didnt bother posting, but when Cathpah posted I thought maybe I am not off base.

See, I knew someone would take issue with my comments. Despite my best effort, clearing stating I was not criticizing.

I also was not pointing my nose in any direction other than the computer I was posting on.

I laugh because I think it's fun and encouraging that some are discovering a tool that's old-school and finding it useful again. Can you handle that ?

My comments are quite positive, your take on them is your problem.

Saying "I'm not a racist, but..." doesn't preclude one's subsequent statement from being racist, so your disclaimer of not being critical/laughing at those who use this modifier doesn't make this any less condescending towards those that enjoy using this modifier.

I don't think any of this is my problem, so I'm a-okay. I just posted a rebuttal to your comment, yet somehow you find your comment to be totally reasonable, but any response to your comment is apparently just absurd (according to you).

"Can you handle that?"

That's the way I took it too, because that's how you mean it a lot of the time.
Your reputation precedes you.

Something to be learned here for everyone.

We've all grown.

Lots of good information and opinions from you guys.
It's exactly what hacks like me need to try and get better.
