You misunderstood what I'm saying. I Never sad the Maxilite is heavy. It's very light, but it is bulky.

It doesn't collapse like an umbrella or softbox so the ~16" x 16" dimension is it. That's what you have to carry. For some, it's not convenient and they'd like something that folds flat and small.

I'd love to see what this thing does... i mean, i understand the physics of it, but i'd love to see a real world example. More specifically something that can't be duplicated using our current line of modifiers.

Not saying it's not possible, just would love to see the difference...

Oh sorry Rob, Yes, I understood you were saying it wouldn't weigh too much, it's only a bit of spun aluminium, but IMHO, it wouldn't be too much of a drama to take away with you, well........Not compared to my mates fresnel which gave us enough grief when we were just playing with it in his lounge-room :D :D !!

Thanks,

Austen.

I'll send him a msg in the morning and see if he'll let me link to some of his work that he's done with it !

Here is a location shot using Mike's Maxilite. Its a really tight narrow beam and is going to take getting use too.

It's like being able to control the sun.

Great shots, everyone.

Happy Birthday, Rob.

My mate has bought a fresnel lens for his Elichroms, and while it's an awesome piece of gear, he uses it for "simulated sunlight", I couldn't help but wonder if a Maxilite would be something similar, at one tenth the cost (and weight) and a darn site easier to cart around !

Cheers,

Austen.

Hey Austen, I researched this exact simulated sunlight effect heavily as I really love the work Kesler does with his Hardbox.

That being said the maxilite like most reflectors gives a double edged shadow (not a sharp lined shadow like the sun does). 90% of people will never notice it, but my OCD has forced me to find another alternative.

For countries with a strong used market there's an older style Fresnel by the name of "Selecon Acclaim" and with minimal DIY skills this can be converted into an Elinchrom mount.

I can't afford the Eli Fresnel and our used market is near useless here so after having numerous conversations with Hermes I decided to make my own concentrated light source (I'm just getting the last of the discs cut and then I'll show photos).

It's basically a set 18cm Aluminium discs (or 21cm if you use the larger reflectors) with a different sized Iris cut out of the center of each to minimise the size of the lightsource and stop the reflected double edged shadow. Nick has experimented with it and I should be able to give results within a couple of weeks (14hour days over Christmas at work is FUN ).

All this being said, if I'd been able to find real world results of the Jinbei spot I probably would've gone that way.

Hi Austen,

The Maxilite, for me, is my Sun. I was inspired by Matthew Jordan Smith, who uses the the Profoto Magnum as his Sun and after doing a bit of research it occurred to me that the Elinchrom Maxilite was as close and equivalent as possible.

Modifiers like the Maxilite and beauty dishes are great on location but they are an awkward shape and size and aren't collapsible so for some, the convenience could be countered by the bulk.

Maxilite is my go to location modifier (just infront of the 70cm DO) as it gives my Quadra so much more versatility.

It should produce that perfect hard edged shadow.

Here are some more samples of the Fireball in action.

Here is a video behind the scenes using the gear. I look stupid and sound stupid and I wasn't taking part in their smoking.

Is a diffusion sock ever necessary, or does it just turn it into a circular softbox?
